The current lay of the land is that we are an island in the middle of a fibre sea. Our neighbours Van Riebeeckshof, Welgedacht and Welgemoed all have fibre. In fact the fibre runs down our streets (Grandiflora St). What is required to get some of that fibre action? Any interest from Protea Valley residents?

EDIT: Please register your interest here https://vumatel.co.za/coverage

That would be great to have it in the neighbourhood, not just around it.

Hi there. Why don't you step into the shoes of being a fibre champion and drive such an initiative in your area. Send out RFPs, pick the best one and run with it. You need a lot of energy, passion and a never ending will to get it done for this, so if you're up for the challenge, go for it.

I'm interested. Maybe we can start the process with the help of the Proteavallei Residents Association. There is a Facebook page for it.

Heya guys n gals.

We're moving in end of July to Protea Valley - a few questions if you don't mind . First thing we did look for was Fibre and that is in the planning process. What speeds ADSL (or hopefully VDSL) are you currently getting? I am in the Telco - not Telkom - industry (Fibre etc) and the procedure is definitely to get as many signatures as possible to get it to be considered. From there the wait is awful, however, as I have seen it is in planning phase with Telkom it should hopefully be about a 6 month wait. I'm going to pop into their offices tomorrow to get more info.

I have also seen above that someone posted about a residents page on FB - can't find it so please can you confirm the name in full as we'd love to join it.

Hi everyone,

I know this is a fairly old thread, and I stay in Door de Kraal instead of Protea Valley.
I can't seem to find any information on a Door de Kraal residents association, so I'm trying to see if I can join up with the Protea Valley folks.

Protea Valley and Door de Kraal seem to be grouped together as far as Vumatel's areas of interest go. Currently we need about 330 more "shows of interest" to be considered for a rollout.
Vumatel is not the cheapest, but as far as I can tell, they do seem to be our best bet so far for FTTH. They are also open access, with a variety of ISPs available to choose from.

crazy that fibre is all around here but Protea Valley has been skipped...

a Vox agent moved in the area a dew months ago and she applied for fibre also. She said it should be here in a few months

Indeed. Even VDSL is lacking.
Is Vox open access though? The appealing part about Vumatel is that it is open access, with a variety of ISPs available on the network.
Personally I'm very interested in Cool Ideas.
I know I'm harping on Vumatel, but so far they are the only provider in our area that appears to have an indication of how much interest has been shown and how much more is needed. It is encouraging to see the number of required signups drop every few days.
They recently also got enough signups in the De Bron area to start rolling out there soon. I'm hoping that will translate to Door de Kraal/Protea Valley being expedited once enough signups are obtained.

My first choice would be DFA though, but apparently the closest node is about 6.7km from my house, despite live DFA fibre being 250m from me, so that is a no-go. DFA also do not do direct-to-the-customer sales, and their "retail arm", SADV seem to also focus more on gated communities and complexes.

The Protea Valley Residents Association seems to mostly be an occasionally updated Facebook page and a seemingly severally outdated webpage. Is there any way of getting a significant number of residents together to at least indicate interest at a sufficient level at one of the fibre providers so that the area can be noticed?

Twice in the past 3 weeks I have spoken to 2 guys pulling fibre on Grandiflora road. Apparently its Telkom Fibre and for use in Protea Valley. No timelines.

At the time of writing Protea Valley, Door de Kraal is at 16% interested with Vumatel. If you in the area please show your interest here https://vumatel.co.za/coverage Vumatel has already started installation in the Kenridge area - lets not get left behind!

Showed interest with Vox yesterday, just got a reply back that there is no fibre in our area. They'll apparently let me know when they plan to roll out, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I've been watching this figure since start of December 2016, it gradually goes up, but at the pace it's going, it'll take years to reach critical mass. ;)

Unfortunately we're quite new to the area (only moved in at the start of November 2016), so I don't know enough people to physically start the drive for signups, hence why I "resurrected" this "old" thread. :)
I reckon a physical word of mouth campaign will get the best results. So please also ask neighbours to sign up etc.

I live in the Stellenberg area and we are set to get fibre in the coming months! So excited! :)

Lucky you!! :)
Is this also with Vumatel? Did you participate in any kind of neighbourhood drive to reach the required number of signups?

Please keep us posted as things progress.
