The cycle lanes near us are car parks. The DA councillor also approves of their behaviour because he's car friendly and a business supporter.

There is NO respect for cyclists.

I think it's a combination of anger towards road cyclists' often dodgy behaviour on the road coupled with the fact that many forumites would probably keel over and die at the thought of raising their pulses for longer than a brief gander at the 'hotties on tv' thread. :p
 
Hmmm, why is this not also being touted as race related crime?
I mean the white guy who shambokked his gardener was immediately reported as a race related crime :confused:

These were 2 black navy guys attacking white cyclists.

No. How about cyclists drive single file, use cycle lanes and stay off freeways? Also if you want to be acknowledged as a vehicle you need to have a license plate and you need to follow the rules. This is a must.

Bike driving will be more dangerous. Because you're not in a metal cage with crumple zones, side impact bars, air bags and so on.

You see that's the thing. Us motorists, we don't train our driving skills on busy roads. Even learner drivers have the sense to not drive during peak hour traffic and at other times they are also a nuisance we all tolerate. But you're free to also train on a treadmill or a gym bike at home or at the gym.

I can understand someone not being able to afford a car and cycling to work. Usually it's a person on a cheap or older bike, dressed as a labourer. I have fully sympathy for these people. But people who cycle for their hobby and take up space while the rest of us are trying to get to work, or hospital or elsewhere, that just you know sucks from the cyclists side.

Bicycle users are pretty rare on the roads, compared to cars. But they tend to get noticed. You know like taxi drivers. With so many complaints, where there is smoke there is fire, there has to be a grain of salt there.
 
Navy men accused of sjambok attack in bail bid

Cape Town - Two navy employees will return to the Simon's Town Magistrate's Court on Friday for a bail application.

Johannes Horn and Musa Kheswa were in the dock on Wednesday after their arrest earlier this week for assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.

This followed six cyclists and a runner being whipped with a sjambok on Saturday between 06:45 and 07:30 between Main Road in Kalk Bay and Blackhill Road in Glencairn.

It is alleged that Horn and Kheswa were in the silver VW Polo identified by the victims.

The cyclists sustained deep cuts and wounds during the assault.

Police are investigating the motive for the attack.

The two remain in police custody.

SA Navy members get bail after sjambokking cyclists

CAPE TOWN - Johannes Horn and Musa Kheswa have been released on bail of R1,000 each.

They’ve been charged with seven counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The two dressed in black pants and black tops were visibly relieved when they learnt they would not be spending the weekend behind bars.

Earlier this week, the court heard how the two would allegedly drive past cyclists and beat them with a sjambok.

I'd say occasional dodgy behaviour. It's actually not the norm for cyclists to shoot through red lights, ride abreast and so on.

Some motorists simply hate cyclists. Occasional bad behaviour by a cyclist gets used as an excuse, but really this hatred of cyclists goes back decades. Sometimes the excuse is simply that they dare to take up road space.

Nah for sure. But as a mountainbiker myself, I like to get my roadie digs in where I can. :p
 
You get three types of cyclist, and only one of them is a problem.

Mountain bikers are usually well adjusted and normal human beings.
Communting cyclists who choose to ride to work instead of driving aren't too bad either.
And then there are the guys who take their road cycling seriously and quite frankly most of them are pricks. They are entitled, aggressive and a danger to themselves and every other road user. I think sjambokking is a good start but we should work up from there.
