Specs of components is really meaningless - in the real world, it is how well the OS uses these components. So, you might find that one phone has more memory or faster processor, but that the lower spec phone is way faster at browsing, because their OS is designed better

I agree 100% with you, for that reason also don't see the point in getting a 4s as the 4 runs better(I don't take gaming into account as I don't see the point in gaming on a phone) than most dual core droids. The new droids may all have some ipressive specs but apple devices are still on top IMO.

That's not true. I have an iPhone 4 and also updated it to iOS5. Actually, the promise of the iOS5 update was the reason for me getting an iPhone 4 in the first place. Suffice to say, I was severely disappointed with it. I expected so much more from it. I formatted my trusty old Galaxy S and flashed MIUI on it last week for my wife, whose Desire is potentially going in for surgery after a nasty drop (the flash spontaneously "flashes" every so often). Whilst setting the phone up, I realized how incredibly awesome MIUI actually is and why I kept going back to it after sampling other ROMs. The Galaxy S was plodding along on stock firmware for the last 3-4 months and there is no reason for it ever to suffer that fate again. My wife was ecstatic about the iPhone, because she's always been a bit of an Apple fangirl, but she told me just this morning that she loves MIUI so much she never wants anything else on her phone and iPhone is lightyears behind Android these days. I just flashed MIUI on the Desire as well and will first toy a bit to see if the issue with the flash can be sorted out without sending it in. She loves her white Desire dearly and will probably grab the thing from me when she sees it running MIUI this afternoon. She's now a self-professed Android junkie as well and told me we should sell all our phones and buy 2 Galaxy Nexuses when they are released... :p
 
720p on a *phone* screen? That's pretty impressive considering the gap between the new Galaxy and all the other phones. None of them come even close...

This really looks like a phone to watch out for, as long as Apple's patent suits don't derail it completely.

That Galaxy Nexus + Android Ice Cream will be a seriously awesome combo! I own both a Droid and Iphone. Both have their strengths - I would say for a stock experience out of box - Iphone is on top but if you're technically inclined and are willing to do some extra work then Droid really takes the lead there. I fully expect ICS combined with Googles new rapid development approach to be a major threat to IOS market share. Not mention the Android market really is exploding - the majority of the apps are free on the Droid market and the quality of the free apps is improving all the time.

As someone said this type of competition is great for us the end users - my greatest hope is that Android phones pull ahead which could possibly force Apple to reduce pricing on the Iphone while still bringing it in terms of competition!

I went with the Sensation XL because I've been informed that it is unlikely that the Sensation XE will make it to South Africa (too similar to the Sensation). The other option was the EVO 3D which hasn't been launched here yet but that has been out overseas for some time.

Am I the only one who'd gladly sacrifice the thinness of a phone for a much bigger/better battery?

GSMArena is usually right, but I couldn't find mention of an SD card slot elsewhere at the time of writing.

Rebuke on the GPUs duly noted - Easy to cross-reference Galaxy Nexus OMAP SoC to PowerVR SGX540 @ 384 MHz and Razr OMAP SoC to PowerVR SGX540 @ 304 MHz (thank you Wikipedia).

I'll try to update my spreadsheets later this afternoon.

And the nice thing about Android is that you can change that if you don't like it. There are quite a number of lauchers avaiable if you don't like the one that comes with your phone.

For the more advanced users, you can even flash a custom ROM onto your device to make it even slicker.

Never buy a car with the bonnet welded shut....

Indeed. Going from a Moto Milestone (256MB RAM) to a Moto Atrix (1GB RAM / Dual core), the difference is definately palpable.

As for the iPhone only having 512MB of RAM?
That's actually OK as it doesn't multi-task so it doesn't NEED more than that really.

Spoken like a true iPhone Fanboi who has never seen that amongst Android phones, the OEM's determine the OS's "look and feel".
Samsung has it's thing, HTC has "Sense", Motorola has "MotoBlur" and so forth so don't proclaim your lack preference on Android itself as you actually disagree with Samsung's interpretation of what the UI should be.

You should try a modern Motorola with "MotoBlur" really good. Resizable Widgets and tight Social networking integration.
That is IF you can get your sticky paws onto a high-end Motorola phone... they're even rarer and more exclusive than your precious iThings.
 
Now it's simply down to when these will be available in SA. I was thinking about getting a SII next month when I'm eligible for an upgrade, but I'd be happy to wait for the Nexus if it becomes available in the relatively near future.

Put differently. The iPhone4 does not NEED more than 512 MB RAM since it's not Really Multi-tasking it's context switching between tasks which is different to Multi-tasking where (like on Android) more than one thing can run in the background and all of them can potentially cause your phone to re-boot.

Call it a race to reboot feature if "Multi-tasking" is too technical.
That is the downside but there are upsides to Android.

Agreed, it's one thing I've learnt to appreciate with my iPad over my Desire. You can load as many apps as you like with very little impact on performance or battery draw whereas with the Desire I have to run AppTaskKiller to close apps I didn't even know I started :D
