Think I might get the S5 :D

How much better is the D40 than the S5 for an amature?

Completely different league - I'd still pay the extra on top of the d40 and get the canon dslr though.

No R5000 is my max :) So D40 really worth it over the S5 and why?

Ps merc can you list some of your reasons? Thanks for the answer:)

Yes, definitely. Any DSLR will outperform a point-and-shoot because it uses bigger and better lenses and the DSLR camera has much more powerful features and processors so you always get awesome images. Have a look here -> http://www.flickr.com/cameras/nikon/d40/
Now tell me if a point-and-shoot can do that :)

You're kidding right? Cameras do not make awesome images - photographers do - and rarely ever always.

And TBH I see some pretty decent images coming out of the S5 too - http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/powershot_s5_is/
Sorry but isn't the D40 a dslr?
It sure is - thats why I provided a comparison between dslr's (eg the d40) and point and shoots (eg the Canon S5 IS) as you can see in the article both have considerable strengths and weaknesses.

Ahhh now only do i see the "canon" part :)

Heard from a friend, who is a really good (top of his class) photographer that maybe I should get the nikon because the lenses are less expensive for nikon on the lower price range (my range:D)

Ok so you both agree the extra R1000 is worth it for the D40 packadge over the S5 in the ad?

You both also agree that this is a good deal and a good price(I won't find it cheaper without looking very hard:))?

I'm kidding? You must be. Are you actually suggesting that a P&S is better? Sure the photographer needs to know what he's doing but the camera plays an important role here as well. Come on...

Yes, get the D40.

Ok last question is there another camera (DSLR) I can buy that is as good or better for R4000-R5000 that you know of?

The camera is nowhere near as important as the guy (or gal) looking through it.

I've seen plenty of people spend tons of money on the top of the range gear and produce images that my kid could do with her point and shoot.

So yeah the gear is important but only if you have the skill to take advantage of it.

+1, know of any better DSLR than this D40 that I could get for R4000-R5000? :p:D

Fair enough :)

At that level no - at least not that I know. :)
