great so I also get the nod from you for the D40 for sub R5k range?
Knock yourself out. :)

Though I would like to reiterate that I would save a little longer and take it up a level.

What about the canon 350d? Was looking at a kit a while ago for round about R4000.
As far as I'm concerned its on the same level as the D40 . . . I also wasnt aware that it was so inexpensive these days.

I would agree with bwana...

Save up for a little bit longer and get something like the 400D.. its a MUCH nicer camera.

No R5000 is my max :) So D40 really worth it over the S5 and why?

Do you just want to take some nice pics or do you want to get to learn how things work and learn to manipulate the camera to do what *you* want? If you just want to take some nice pics, a cheap P&S will do. But at that price range, I can't see a reason to not buy the DSLR. You can put it in fully auto mode too if you really want, but that's not what we get them for, now is it?

Heard from a friend, who is a really good (top of his class) photographer that maybe I should get the nikon because the lenses are less expensive for nikon on the lower price range (my range:D)

The low end lenses are comparable on either side. The mid- to high-end glass, the Nikon tends to be more expensive. A few examples from my local shop:

Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6G VR ED AF-S DX - £389.95
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM - £346.95

Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 G DX AF-S IF-ED - £819.00
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM - £620.95

Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR - £418.99
Canon EF-S 18-200 f 3.5-5.6 IS - £448.95 (coming down nicely, it was £599 just the other day)

Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 G AF-S ED - £984.95
Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8 L USM - £796.95

Nikon 50mm f1.8 D AF - £76.99
Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II - £71.95

Ok so you both agree the extra R1000 is worth it for the D40 packadge over the S5...
Yes

...in the ad?
Dunno about that - shop around

The camera is nowhere near as important as the guy (or gal) looking through it.

I've seen plenty of people spend tons of money on the top of the range gear and produce images that my kid could do with her point and shoot.

Yeah, just look at my photostream ;)

Explain why.
For me its the sensor - the extra 4mp means a lot to a guy like me who regularly sits a 50mm lens on one of his two 400Ds (natural bias there :D) and as a result I crop like mad. :)

The auto cleaning sensor and AEB also played a big role when I was looking for a back up camera.

I dont see a great advantage over the two. They seem to slot into the same level of DSLR's when compared to the much nicer camera's on the market.

ok so now it is between the D40 and the 350d.

I know I can google this but to me it means jack shlt because I don't really know anything about cameras. That why I as you people :)

Lol, which is better IYO?

I want to learn about using the camera but I can not pay more than R5000 for a camera (I have studies and petrol and food to buy you know:p).

I had the same choice a few months ago. The best thing you can do is goto Game and check both out.

Pick them up and feel for yourself, which feels better in your hands. That was important to me. I felt the Canon to be sllightly heavier and with a smaller LCD screen.

Here is some reviews on the Nikon - http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

I was stuck with the same decision for my first dslr ... decided to go with the Canon 400D. Ended up to be a brilliant choice.

As you have a budget you must think about glass. You will end up spending more for glass than you will for the camera.

I guess it will boil down eventually to personal preference in terms of how each one fits in your hand and were you get the best deal.

If you go for the Canon 350D - you must get the Canon nifty fifty lens.

My suggestion to you is to save up more and get yourself a better camera. Dont forget - lenses are bloody expensive and very soon that kit lens will not be good enough.
