29 year old gamer bringing in some perspective.
To me gaming is a trade-off between Money, Time and Enthusiasm
When I was between 13-18, I had a lot of time, enthusiasm and not enough money.
When I was between 19-24, I had enthusiasm and a little more money and a little time as well. I call this my gaming golden age.
Between 25-now, I have a lot of money, a little less enthusiasm and no time.
Where am I going with this?
Between 13-18 (year 2000-2005), I was a devout PC gamer. It was no myth, PC gaming was cheaper when you had the time to build it yourself, hunt down deals or "copy" from a friend. Also, back then steam was just starting out, online gaming was not even an option for a household such as mine and emulators covered me with all consoles PS1 and below.
Between 19-24 (year 2006-2011), I was still enthusiastic about PC and but bought my first next gen console a.k.a. Xbox 360. Also note that during this period, getting performance comparable to a console required a mid-high end graphics card, however with time and patience, overclocking and tweaking to squeeze out maximum performance was still an option. The deciding factor for me to get the console was Halo, Gears and Forza + the controller was infinitely more ergonomic than the PS3's dual shock. To scratch my Tekken itch at the time I also bought a PSP.
Between 25 and now (year 2012-2016), Time became a rarity. Between work, marriage and now a kid, I cannot afford the time to update drivers, tweak settings and fix any random issues that may arise on PC. I have the money so I own a decent PC with SLI setup, Xbox One and PS4, however I mostly find myself gaming on my Xbox One. My younger nephews have now taken up the Master Race mantle, my younger brother who is now in his gaming golden age enjoys PS4 more than I did. I game on mostly over weekends and short sessions in the evenings. Once in a while an old friend will show up on Steam or Xbox Live and we will jam for an hour or two.
I think I will always be a gamer at heart. It's the one thing that has stuck with me throughout the years. I am very much platform agnostic now and game on PC (Witcher), PS4 (Uncharted) and the Xbox but prefer the Xbox mainly because of the controller, exclusives (pre ordered GOW4 & Horizon 3), EA Access and lastly my old buds that still play there.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Writing out this post brought back many many good memories
