Good day all.

I would like to know how many Vodacom users would be interested in some kind of "Gaming APN". If there is enough support perhaps we can convince Vodacom3g to take our case to Vodacom and see where it goes.

My personal requirements are:
1. Reliability: Very little to no packet loss.
2. Latency: Best latency possible. (But what I usually get is good enough)
3. Free. I really don't want to have to fork out another R49 per month for this.

Not important to me:
1. Speed: Anything above 256k is fine by me.
2. Http, smtp, ftp, p2p, torrents: Unless the game needs some kind of p2p to work, I don't want this to be used to improve torrentz or things like that.

If anybody can think of anything else to add, please feel free. :D

Mods, can you please add a poll?
- Yes, I would give my left kidney for a Gaming APN
- Yes, I really, really want one, but will not pay for it
- I would use one if it were there, but I don't really care
- No, I am happy with what I get
- No, and I don't want Vodacom's focus to be taken away from their primary job of providing us with better connectivity.
- Don't care either way

Another APN won't give you better reliability or latency. These are factors that's not influenced by the APN at all. The APN can only control parameter at IP level.

So, you're asking for an APN that has better reliability than the standard? So what is going to stop everyone from moving to the new APN until it's reliability is also threatened? Especially as you want it for free - in other words all of us have to pay for it, whether we game or not. I'd far rather Vodacom used their resources to improve the reliability and latency of the existing APNs.

Following on from that, you left at least one option out of your poll

Darn. Any idea of how something like this can be implemented?

I understand your hesitation. Perhaps Vodacom can ask the users what online games they play and the connection only works for those games? WoW, Eve, Guild Wars, etc only have a limited amount of servers and port settings.

I agree, I do not want Vodacom to create a reliable APN and then everyone uses it to torrent or whatever.

What I want is a way to play a game knowing that my connection will not cr@p out in the middle of a quest/raid/poker hand or whatever.

Yup, we're an equal reliability provider.....;)

We all want that, make no mistake.

But the challenges we have is not at IP level, it's lower down and thus affects any 3G connection.

And that, at the moment, is why I cannot continue to use 3G as my internet connection... :(

Understand fully.

I see you're in Rondebosch which is unfortunately one of the most difficult places to get proper cell coverage in Cape Town. Thank your boycotting neighbours.

If you PM me your physical address and contact details I can check up why you're battling.
