Gaming Headphone SUB R1k

I got the Turtle Beach PX5's for XBox gaming. Not only do they sound awesome, but they give you an advantage as the 360 surround sound is extremely accurate.
Prior to the Turtle Beach PX5's, I had the Turtle Beach X41's.
Based on my experience with these I am now going for the Turtle Beach PC headsets

I have had this dilemma the past week as well.

My somewhat decent "PoS" Prestigio PHS4 USB headset just went bust (I have come to the conclusion the cable always ****s out on those things) but it actually did a somewhat decent job. I have quite a decent on board sound card on my PC and I feel it has been neglected due to my having a USB headset.

Not looking to spend a fortune so this thread hit the mark. It scares me that the headphones I was looking at did not even crack a nod: The Razer Carcharias. I am in the same position as OP - something decent for gaming / music / movies with a mic.

The advantage of gaming style headsets for me is I can order them at cost price at suppliers, which is really nice considering what the Rand/$ is doing at the moment.

Anyone have experience with the Razer? A lot of the reviews are saying it is pretty comfy and decent quality but I have seen 1 or 2 complaints about the mic not being durable.

Seriously? You don't understand quality?
You can get decent Sennheiser headphones for much less than that, don't know where you pull those numbers from. They cover all price rangers (except the absolute cheapest of course but we're not looking at those).
I'm sure Sennheiser phones at the same price as anything from Logitech, Coolermaster and probably Razor will blow them away.

And why would you only use them for gaming? Don't you have music on your PC?

Anyway, my new Sennheiser HD518 just arrived. Played a few tracks with it, they actually sound better than my 515s did, the bass is certainly more powerful. Never thought I would be enough of a sound quality freak to notice the difference!

They retail for $170 in New Zealand. That's definitely under R1000 although I'm not sure what the actual price in SA will be.

Nice. There's a hack you can do which some say increases the sound quality to be like the HD595s... Google it but I'd be sceptical of the results because it just involves removing a part which would have been installed intentionally by Sennheiser.

He doesn't know what he's talking about. With the addition of a decent sound card, the Sennies would probably win for surround sound, even though they're 2 channel.

In fact I did a test a while ago with BLOPS:

Stock Roccat Kave ("physical 5.1")
Vs
Logitech PC 120 headset (R150 or so), driven by Asus Xonar Essence STX

Logitech PC 120 won for directional/positional accuracy/surround.

I have a Xonar DG sound card. Not much, but a LOT better than onboard.

Xense has a connector/"daughterboard" thing for the jack that looks like a DVI port. Converts it to 5.1 or 7.1 (can't remember) 3.5mm jacks.

Essence STX is designed for 2 channel speakers. My Logitech Z-2300 are connected via the bundled 3.5mm → RCA convertor. Sennheiser HD595 plugged in via 6.3mm jack.

You want the Xonar card to have the Dolby presets, like Dolby Headphone, Dolby Pro Logic II, etc. I would start with Xonar DX at around R750. This is not amplified. Xense bundle's sound card (similar to Essence STX as I mentioned earlier) has the amplification needed to drive the bundled Sennheiser PC-350 (600Ohm IIRC). HD5xx are only 50-60Ohm, so don't require amplification as much (although any/most headphones will always sound better slightly amplified ;)). I think normal 3.5mm jacks put out 40 - 50Ohms.

So is the PC350 + Xense bundle better than buying a clip-on mike + HD555 + Some other Xonar? Meaning, what's the best value for money I can buy, I'd like all the Dolby presets, a good headset, but with the condition of finding best bang-for-buck in the R2000 - R2500 range?

For gaming, yes. Especially because PC-350 are closed design, where HD5xx are open (so you hear outside sounds and others can hear what you're listening to). PC-350 also have emphasis on bass, as it's a big factor in gaming for the most part (think bangs, explosions, etc.). They lack the higher/mid tone accuracy of HD5xx, so a music listener would find the bass muddying out the more important/detailed tones.

For gaming, and then music, in order of priority, probably, depending on how trained the listener's ear is.

For music, then gaming, no.

Don't get me wrong, PC-350 will still blow most people away for music listening. The bundle offers excellent value. Personally I'd take HD5xx + Xonar Essence STX. :)
