I suggest buying a R200 jobbie (i.e. Logitech headset PC 120 or something for R150) and saving up for something decent (like my recommendation, or the Xense bundle) that will give you far more years of quality and entertainment. I cannot advocate dropping R1,100 on a hyped/marketed-up gaming head set, when something marginally more expensive is just so much better.
 
So i got me an el cheapo headset. So far:my ears are like tomatoes, the headset is uncomfortable. It's terribly ugly, grey... I mean its 2011 ffs. Sound is fine. I haven't used a quality headset so I won't know the difference.
Bottom line, it works but I ain't happy, still looking for something I can afford(under R 1k)

Please don't touch "gaming" headsets or crap from companies that don't specialise in high quality sound equipment (Logitech, Coolermaster ect)

You can't go wrong with Sennheisser. High quality headphones are their speciality. Ordered an HD518 for myself, should arrive tomorrow :)
 
Could someone explain in a game what a sennheisser would do that other headphones don't? Can you hear more things? is it clearer or what? Will someone's foot steps now sound 100x better? Can you hear an enemy coming that other headset won't?

I know i would be fking disappoint if i bought 2k headphones and noticed next to no difference in game. I can see how movies or music could sound better but i am not certain you need a 2k set of headphones to play games. It seems the way you guys talk that the anything but sennheiser won't sound good but that is not the case. Recommending someone buys a cheap uncomfortable piece of shyte headphone over a roccat cave seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Surely that roccat cave cannot sound so bad that it's not worth buying? I have a cyber sniper 5.1 channel and they sound epic.

@Killa, the soundstage, the clarity, the bass (not because it goes doof doof louder, but the immersion and distinguished clear effect). You can alter each detail of your sound and it actually makes a difference.

when i had the Roccats, you use that little thing attached to the cable and all it did was make it loud/soft. the only good thing was the positional audio of the Roccats - the sound would crackle a tiny bit at high volumes and the bass overpowered the other sounds by a long shot.

I think let's start by you Googling the differences, and for reviews. Or by going to a shop and comparing your PoS headphones with something decent, driven correctly. Or, just take the word of people who own both, if you cannot appreciate hardware review sites' input?

Your thinking x sounds epic is preventing you from understanding why y would be better.

Your thinking, "Ag I don't see how these z headphones could sound so bad", etc., is causing even more ignorance.

My 5.1 headset cost me 550, a good set of sennheiser 1.5k-2k

For gaming there is no microphone either. Again will i hear things i cannot hear on my headset? Is the clarity so much better that my headphones sound so crap you cannot make out the sound?

I think the ignorant one here is the person who feels a shyte uncomfortable piece of shyte headset is the same as a decent 700 rand headset

The ignorant one here is someone who doesn't realize some people don't have 2k for a headset so they recommend a piece of shyte headset that hurts your ears. That is not ignorant that is straight up retarded. You advised a guy to buy a crap headset that is uncomfortable because he cannot buy an expensive headset when he could have a decent headset for 700-800 bucks :eek:.

While i understand what you are saying there is a big difference between roccat and some crap headset, i have a crap cheap headset and it is rubbish compared my 5.1 550 rand one and it hurts my ears. So call me ignorant but i am not the one recommending a cheap rubbish uncomfortable headset because someone cannot afford the high end stuff.

Alan you ignorant nub that headset won't work, you won't hear anything so buy a cheap uncomfortable one and hope you can one day afford the expensive stuff. (please note alan i am using as an example and in no way am i being rude, nasty or horrible :D). If you cannot afford sennheiser use the cheapest piece of rubbish you can find.

To follow up, this is what I had in mind, as per my recommendation, as I have experience with them. Cost R150. http://www.logitech.com/en-au/webcam-communications/internet-headsets-phones/devices/268

I used them for more than a year playing Starcraft 2 and Black Ops and they were surprisingly awesome considering how cheap they were. Loud enough, but more importantly, I could wear them comfortably for hours.

Link please? Sounds like they are big/bulky/heavy, poor quality cushioning, etc. Wish you had stayed away! Unless perhaps you need to wear in the cushions?

By sheer coincident I have my set of Vulcan's arriving today. I'll post a quick review once I've put them through their paces.
Reviews are universally excellent for this set of cans... let's hope I agree.
BTW: my current headset is a set of ancient Sennheisser HD497's (if I don't need a mic) and PC-151's if I do. I firmly believe you get what you pay for and that quality is a virtue in itself.

Sound card?

I suppose if you were just looking at style, the Vulcan may not be your cup of tea, but then, maybe so. One thing I can say is that these things are the ultimate for LAN gaming. ASUS did a fantastic job with the Vulcan, proudly wearing the ROG badge. These are the finest gaming headsets available. Yes, I believe I am actually gushing over a pair of headphones!

Sweet it could the perfect fit for OP :D. I got my eyes on that asus sennheisser one i posted a while back but not really sure if i can justify a 2.3k headset for gaming. Seems a bit extreme.

Can someone tell me if going from a cheapie mid range headset to a high end one is worth it for gaming alone?

Dude you recommended someone gets a crap piece of rubbish headset that hurts ears so i would like a different opinion so i don't end up wasting my money because you obviously punt sennheiser and would rather recommend rubbish than anything half decent.

I will chat to brawler tonight ask him if it is worth it for gaming, advice from you pfffft i think not.

Also you should try help people understand instead of acting like an arrogant prick.

Dolby Pro Logic II is for stereo headphones/sets. Will be one of the main specs. It's what most [USB I think] gaming headsets come with, and what is often used in games/media for more pronounced surround sound on a 2 channel source.
