Hey guys, now I know we have some other threads that deal with this but they have all been derailed at some point. Lets keep this thread on topic. Now gaming on linux is something that many new linux users do not know much about.

Some basics:

Will my Windows Games run in Linux?

Answer

This is a difficult question to answer, if you think you can just pop your cd into your drive and it will work, well it won't.

However using, Wine, Cedega or even Crossover-Gaming you "might" get a few games to run. From personal experence I have managed to get NFS Carbon, Doom 3, Quake 3 Arena, War Craft 3, GTA SA to run under linux.

Although it is possible to get some other games to work. I would recommend you read these websites

http://www.winehq.org/
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/
http://www.transgaming.com/

Then their are official Linux ports of certain games, these include UT 2004, Quake 4 etc.

However Linux also has some of its own games, (some of the games are clones of popular Windows versions)

Ok, guys I know this is incomplete but I will edit it and add to it at stages. Hopefully some of you can also add to this thread

Q3 should have a native client...

I got bf2 running on Cedega... but punkbuster doesnt like it on the SGS servers :(

All true but getting Q3 client to install is a pain, was much easier to just run it under Cedega. Still can't get BF2142 to run yet

Thanks w1z4rd,

Busy installing Q3 for Linux now... Yay

I've just checked the Wine Application Database and several of my favourite apps will apparently work on Wine, including Winamp and Neverwinter Nights 2. I'm actually considering moving to Linux. The only thing that has been holding me back is the gaming issue. If they get the SIMS 2 to work on Wine then I'll be sold.

As soon as they port Steam and Source based games Im sold... Also maybe GTA 4 (Once it hits pc) and CoD4

I am not into gaming and dont really use linux, so kind of a noob in this regard.

But i plan to install Ubuntu on my pc very shortly, just to muck about and the gaming thing will be interesting to try out.

Are Cedega, wine etc windows emulators? I.e. i get my windows version of the game and run it through one of these emulators?

WINE Is Not an Emulator

Cedega has a site which has a database (and a forum where people document successes and failures) of which games run and how well they run. Cedega is a fee based system. Wine is not. But that is why you will probably find more games run under Cedega.

If you seriously want to game, run a dual boot.

I agree, dual booting is the way to go. Cedega and Wine are a waste of time:(
