My work laptop can't run the latest games in the worst graphics anymore :(

I want to buy a gaming laptop.

I would like it to be able to run the latest games at medium - high resolution. Support for the latest shaders/dx11 etc, would be nice.

I will also be using it for multimedia, seeing as though I don't have a tv or hi-fi ^_^

I would like it be able to run 8gb ram, as my music editing software uses a lot of mem.

I am willing to spend a little over 10k

What are your recommendations?

What games? Not much going to happen for that price i am sorry to say.

Do you specifically need a laptop for work related stuff? If not, why not look at getting a desktop? If you build it up from scratch, you'll be able to buy most parts at discounted prices and get more bang for your buck.

Want to be able to play the next generation of FPS, not on full graphics, but I want them to run at normal speed
I want to be able to run the upcoming Total War Shogun II
I want to be able to run Fable3 when it comes out on pc
Diablo 3 aswell, if it doesn't take so long

Ok, what desktop can I get for around 10k?

I was going for mobility, because I might want to travel in the near future, but I suppose I could give the desktop to my parents when I do decide to travel, or I could sell it. Maybe I can get a cheaper laptop in Europe when the time comes?

A decent gaming laptop would be something like an Alienware but that's about R20k. As mentioned above a gaming desktop would make way more sense, and you can upgrade components as you go. I bought a high spec laptop a few years back to play games on. Within 2 years it was useless for any new games.

I just checked about every pricelist I had for a 8GB Ram laptop that fell in your pricerange. No luck. It pushes up the price by thousands.
You could consider upgrading your RAM later.
Below are some options, but all have 4GB Ram

Asus A52JT R7586.70
Radeon HD6370m graphics 1GB Ram
15.6" Lcd ( 1366x768 WXGA )
intel Core i5-480M - dual core+ hyper-threading ( 4-threads ) , 2.67Ghz
4GB ram
windows 7 Home premium 64bit

MSI GE603 R8177.08
16" (1366x768)
HM55
Ci5 2.53Ghz (460m)
GT425M 1GB
4GB DDR3
500GB SATA
802.11b/g/n, BT, DVW-RW, WC, HDMI - Win7 Pro 64Bit

One other full HD option is the Asus N53SV-SZ385V (Retails for about R9500)

I'm not sure about a decent gaming notebook costing that much?

I got my envy 17 for R13800 with the following specs:

Microprocessor 1.60 GHz Intel Core i7-720QM Processor
Microprocessor Cache Level 3 cache 6 MB
Memory 4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2048 MB)
Memory Max Supports up to 8 GB DDR3 memory
Video Graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 Graphics
Video Memory up to 2811 MB total graphics memory with 1 GB DDR5 dedicated
Display 43.9 cm (17.3") diagonal Full High-Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920 x 1080)
Hard Drive 500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 7200 rpm
Multimedia Drive SATA optical drive: Blu-ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer
Network Card Integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN
Wireless Connectivity Bluetooth wireless networking 802.11 a/b/g/n
Sound Beats sound system with integrated subwoofer
Keyboard Full size island-style backlit keyboard with numeric keypad
Pointing Device HP Clickpad supporting Multi-Touch gestures with On/Off button
PC Card Slots 5-in-1 integrated Digital Media Reader for Secure Digital cards, MultiMedia cards, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro or xD Picture cards

More than capable than handling most games at high graphic settings. Furthermore i would go as far as to say that you would struggle to meet the same specifications building a desktop rig for less money.

If you're not into HP, here's a dell version with Nvidia graphics.

You can get a much better gaming desktop than gaming notebook for the money. With a notebook, you are paying for its battery and small size.

I got this laptop on a really good special but it's going for R11000 at Incredible Connection. You can upgrade it to 8GB Ram. I have tried a few games and it runs them surprisingly well. The only real complaint I have is the screen resolution is maybe a little on the low side 1366x768. Then again if you up the resolution for gaming the GPU will probably start to struggle.

Runs Crysis and Crysis 2 pretty damn well. Crysis 2 I ran on Very high, was nice but it was a bit more smooth at High.

This laptop from ASUS which was linked earlier has almost the exact same specs at the same price. It does however come with a 1920x1080 resolution screen.

I have never used ASUS laptops but I hear good things about them, this would probably a good one to go for.

I'm really not sure about "much better", like i said in my earlier post, i think you would struggle to match the specifications of performance notebooks without spending at least the same or more on a desktop.

The big issue is the graphics card for gaming, even a lowish end GPU on a desktop is quite a bit better than what you get in the laptops around R10k.

and the rest... well it's a joke really.

*Asus P8P67 Pro
*Intel Core i5-2500K
Mushkin Silverline Low-Voltage 2x4GB DDR3-1333 1.5v
*Coolermaster HAF-X
*Corsair TX750W
VTX3D Radeon HD6850

R9912, one of my upgrade builds I am looking at.

Drop the HafX for somethign cheaper, a lower end PSU and you can add in everything else you need for probably R11k... and that pc is WAY faster than any laptop for the same money.

Ok fair enough, but you have forgotten a few things that come std with a notebook. For instance on my ENVY i have a full HD display and a blu-ray drive which would sort of push your budget up a bit. Now there is no argument that you can gett better performance from a desktop rig. The point i'm trying to make is that there a well priced notebooks out there that would blow most "gaming rigs" out of the water.

Based on a study (done by sn3rd) i followed closely last year it is not the brute force of the graphics card but rather the package as a whole. Specifically, we noticed that a asus gaming notebook out performed a number of desktop pc's with at least the same specifications or better.
