And my statement still stands. I never said a desktop was NOT better value for money; I was just saying that the Envy IS good value for money.
Oh, and you forgot Windows 7 Home Premium... So add around R900 to the price
Not to mention all the "little" things that cost very little, but add up to couple hundred or so... Card reader, PC card reader, etc...

Haha! 100% true. Would only be a truly fair comparison comparing a 17" 1920x1080 monitor to the Envy...
Oh the other hand, 17.3" @ 1920x1080 gives you an incredibly good dot pitch...

Laptop Upgrade
What many people do not understand is that quite often laptops are also upgradeable.
Most things can be upgraded eg -- SSD / CPU / GPU if it is a card type / WiFi cards / 3G cards/ RAM / DVD- Blu Ray / screen can be changed / etc etc.
eg My old DELL latitude can be upgraded to 8 GB ram ( 2 x 4 GB SODIMM )
It is just that in SA the parts are normally impossible to find or are hellish expensive.
Like most markets in SA the Laptop one is heavily skewed.
What many people do not understand is that quite often laptops are also upgradeable.

The Envy is ok value, but the ideas floating around here of comparing it to a desktop of a similar price? It has no chance at all, never will.
I just faffed about with a prebuilt pc to get that. Card reader is R149 extra, windows lets call it R900. Then it's just a hair more expensive than the Envy and is in a completely different league of performance. You can save quite a bit if you build it yourself as well.
Only buy a laptop if you NEED mobility, other than that there is no reason at all to ever look at a laptop.

If you read back, I was saying that everyone seems to be misinterpreting everyone else and getting uptight due to fanboi-ism. PS3 vs. Xbox, iPhone vs. Blackberry, LCD vs. plasma, Linux vs. Windows, notebook vs. desktop.
At the end of the day, if mobility is a concern, then a notebook is basically the only choice. If mobility is not a concern, then guess what? A notebook is still a choice.

So what did the i5 2400, or for that matter any sandybridge based quad core, score in this Mixed Radix FFT test? and what did the laptop core i7 720QM score? I'm pretty sure if the i7 720QM comes anywhere near any of the sandy bridge quad cores the software is not even remotely optimized.
Ok lets make this really simple for you. If you didn't need mobility at all, would you buy a laptop over a desktop for the same money?
