I'm sitting with one of the reasonably priced notebooks right here, as well as a crappy gaming rig with a nice GPU(C2Q Q8300, 4GB Ram, GTX570) and trust me there is no comparison in games. For 3D rendering the Laptop is roughly 1.65x Faster but in games due to not having a proper GPU, it gets ugly if you compare them.

For 3D rendering the Laptop is roughly 1.65x Faster but in games due to not having a proper GPU, it gets ugly if you compare them.
How much did you pay for the notebook if you don't mind me asking? I already said for a budget of +-R11k I would drop the HafX and PSU to something a bit lower and then you have enough extra cash to get a Full HD screen + whatever else you would need.
Here is the laptop, it has a Sandybridge i7 2630QM, 4GB Ram, Nvidia GT540M with 1GB Ram.

Yeah sorry Fintan you dont know what you are talking about. There is not a single mobile graphics card that will compete with even a R2000 desktop GPU, and GPU matters for games. A full HD display goes for, what R1500 today? R2000 gets you an LG Full HD IPS LED display, considerably bigger and better than whatever your Envy has. What resolution does your envy has? If its only 1600 x 900, then that is not full HD.
And how much does an envy cost? R15000? Thats a high end notebook, not going to be cheap. Desktop PCs are ALWAYS faster than the equivalently priced notebook.

For that budget I can build you a complete desktop that would make R20k+ laptops wonder which way it went.
It's really simple, a laptop is ALWAYS a compromise, the only reason to ever buy one is if you NEED the mobility. A Desktop for the same money will always win.

Not a cheap option but was easy to get something for the same price.
Here is a rig from Evetech to which I added a 23" Full HD LCD and a Bluray Drive. Price R 14,097.00. I'm not even sure there is any laptop that can match it, nevermind at R14k

My PC was cheaper than my laptop If you spent some time reading reading the thread you would know that full hd is 1920x1200 and again the price is R13800...sheesh

Performance isn't some single-faceted idea... There are many things that influence what someone calls a "performance" rig.
Please configure me a PC that will have approximately identical specs to the Envy 17. It must include a 1920x1080 display, Wireless N, Blu-ray, keyboard with backlit keys, 720p webcam, USB 3.0, eSATA
No-one is saying that a desktop isn't better value for money. But for R13.8k, the Envy is excellent value for a mobile gaming rig.
When it comes to crunching numbers, the Core i7 720 beat many older quads, and was right up with higher end desktop i5's. The desktop i7's obviously destroyed it. If you want some real hard performance comparisons, PM me, and I'll arrange access

The most difficult part of that will be finding a screen that small for a desktop!
Yes, the Envy is a good mobile gaming rig. Its also R14000. I could build a desktop that performs as well, or better, for R10k. Why spend extra if you dont need the mobility? Thats the point - notebooks are more expensive, only buy them if you need the mobility.
