"Gaming" NFTs, a dedicated thread

The whole Axie debacle is interesting, it was way overvalued now it came back down to a reasonable price and the amount of users has gone up. Think play to earn gaming will be massive but it won't challenge the mass market although I might be wrong

Definitely. Second Life is largely unknown, but it released in 2003 and you can earn game money which you can exchange for real dollars. It had 1 million active users at one stage.
Now create something with better marketing, maybe an easier earning cycle, and a bunch of third worlders will flock to it.
The problem is, that the game has to be fun as well, and you need a sustained inflow of people who don't earn a lot of in game currency, who wants the in game items badly enough to pay real money for them.
Think Dota, overwatch, CS, Fortnite etc skins.

Otherwise it will just operate like a ponzi scheme, where the early adopters will come, farm up items, sell them, and then leave once the in game currency value drops.

The biggest issue, is something like Axie, could easily work without blockchain and tokens. If anything, it would be a better product.

That is the main issue with a lot of the things NFTs are being used for.

Oh, lol,

“NFTs are a scam” says indie game site Itch.io

With all the controversy about NFTs – including companies announcing support for them before retracting that support shortly afterward – indie game site Itch.io has taken to Twitter to confirm its stance on the blockchain currency: “NFTs are a scam”, with some harsh words for any company that deals in them.

NFTs are a scam. If you think they are legitimately useful for anything other than the exploitation of creators, financial scams, and the destruction of the planet the we ask that please reevaluate your life choices. Peace

Oops, that you please*

Also f̸̗̎ú̴̩c̷̖͌ḳ̵̀ any company that says they support creators and also endorses NFTs in any way. They only care about their own profit and the opportunity for wealth above anyone else. Especially given the now easily available discourse concerning the problems of NFTs.

 Been there, many a time here.

As for NFTs - which have continued to remain in the news as more and more companies adopt (and occasionally drop) the environmentally devastating tech - Zelnick says he remains "highly convinced" about their value for consumers.

"We believe that NFTs are real," he explained in response to a question around whether NFTs are just another passing industry fad, "and why wouldn't they be? We believe in digital goods and we've been selling digital goods for a very long time," Zelnick says. "We believe in rare goods, we believe in collectibles. The concern we have is that there's a speculation going on.

"We want to make sure that consumers always have a good experience every time they engage with our properties. And losing money on a speculation is not a good experience, so we're going to stay away from speculation. However, we're highly convinced there's an opportunity for NFTs to fit with Take-Two's offerings in the future."

This is an open invite to the same criticism laid to Ubi Quartz's. For some reason, the NFT pundits want NFTs to be speculative...

Anyhow, I can see NFTs being incorporated in Take-Two IP in the time to come.

Ubisoft to experiment with gaming NFTs in The Sandbox metaverse despite player backlash

  • Ubisoft’s move reflects a broader trend of traditional gaming giants looking to sell player items in the metaverse in the form of NFTs
  • Team17, the developer behind the Worms franchise, was forced to cancel its NFT MetaWorms project just 24 hours after it was announced last week

French video games giant Ubisoft has teamed up with the The Sandbox metaverse platform in the latest sign of the fusion between game development and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Animoca Brands, the Hong Kong-based blockchain company behind The Sandbox, said on Tuesday that it formed a strategic partnership with the Paris-listed company, where Ubisoft would receive its own land in the metaverse and develop game experiences with NFTs in the virtual world.

The company said work was already under way to recreate characters and features from Ubisoft’s Rabbids games.

Ah yes, the Sandbox. I spent some time over December trying to win one of their Alpha Passes. Sadly I did not.

Bloody rigged, RIGGED I tell you! /s

Their game maker tool and voxeditor was a bit of fun actually, albeit basic.

NFTs are nothing new...

Idiots have been buying stars for ages...

I don't support anything NFT related in my games.
That's because you have some common sense and can think logically and reasonably. Unfortunately the world is filled with dumbasses, so NFT's in games might actually become a thing that we will have to deal with thanks to the stupidity of average Joe/Jane.

These games are crashing hard. It is actually quite sad, since many who had 'loans' are in debt now.

MINECRAFT AND NFTS

An early look at our upcoming guidelines

Hello everyone! Recently, we’ve received some feedback from members of the community asking for clarification and transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft’s position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidance on new technologies, we wanted to take the opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow. Let’s have a closer look!

WHAT IS AN NFT?

An NFT is a unique, non-editable, digital token that is part of a blockchain and often purchased with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any form of digital asset such as an MPEG or a GIF, but the most common use case today is digital art like JPEGs. The purchase of an NFT provides the token that states the ownership of the original digital file. Yet, with any digital file, that file can be copied, moved, or even deleted. NFTs and blockchain have also been associated with speculation, where prices are driven up rapidly and as we have recently seen, may fall rapidly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME?

If you're a player or creator actively involved in the buying, selling, or trading of NFTs that make use of Minecraft (like skins or worlds), we strongly suggest you go through the information below. Otherwise, it's likely these changes won't affect you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTS AND MINECRAFT

In our Minecraft Usage Guidelines, we outline how a server owner can charge for access, and that all players should have access to the same functionality. We have these rules to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content. NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. Our reasons follow.

Some companies have recently launched NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain could be utilized with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs, allowing players to earn NFTs through activities performed on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities outside the game.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together. NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players.

We are also concerned that some third-party NFTs may not be reliable and may end up costing players who buy them. Some third-party NFT implementations are also entirely dependent on blockchain technology and may require an asset manager who might disappear without notice. There have also been instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices. We recognize that creation inside our game has intrinsic value, and we strive to provide a marketplace where those values can be recognized.

As such, to ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods. We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming. However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft right now.

We hope to have more to share with you soon. In the meantime, if you’re interested in reading up on our guidelines, you can find them here. Stay tuned!

Microsoft/Mojang declared war on the cryptobros. Many Minecraft-crypto related projects have now been red taped or otherwise trashed.

Having an in-depth look at crypto, it is not going anywhere. NFTs are here to stay. I don't believe it will be too long until Valve makes a U-turn. The Steam marketplace is essentially a 'crypto' exchange.

Ubi is sure on-board with crypto, and so is Rockstar who is owned by Take-Two Interactive. The question is, "wen Xbox Games Store?"

I can't, ETH has /cough supposedly gone green and rescued planet Earth, so NFTs will soon be cool too :sneaky:

Looking at the comments and looking at the (admittedly well done) trailer, I don't get it.

It's a "game" that focusses on the collection of toys and the cosmetics (which I assume won't be earned in game), and a 2 seconds of actual gameplay which looks mediocre at best, and people seem amazed by it.
Is it because it looks like an enjoyable way to spend your time, or because they want to speculate on (what I assume is) NFTs?

Game studios are bailing on NFTs they said,

Square Enix announces its first NFT game – Symbiogenesis

Rather than forcing NFTs into an existing franchise or game like Ubisoft, Square Enix is starting up a new IP for its first push into this area. Symbiogenesis is apparently a “digital collectable art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans”, whatever that means.
