Gaming PC under 6k

That pc is will have no life span. Rather build something more balanced which will give you some life span and upgradeability long term. In a year or so you can sell the graphics card for R1000 and upgrade to that generations R1500 card. It'll probably be equivalent to a R3500 HD 5850.

Not too shabby....but no display? Or does he already have a 20'' Samsung LCD?

Why spend half your budget on GFX?

I wouldn't, it was just an example of what you could build with R6000, and showing how far R6000 could go.... I only had a rectron price handy so the price was for a gigabyte VGA card.... My point is that Rand for Rand, investing in a good display card will have the biggest benefits - and that R6000 is plenty to build a decent machine....

Yeah itll be tough to fit a display in there. If he already has a pc he could always not get the harddrive and reduce the ram to 2gigs. That would give him +/- R1500 to put towards a 22/23 inch of some sort.

Yeah, halve the RAM (you can buy that later to upgrade), halve the disk (again, buy another disk later and benefit from a speed increase), and I would say a slower CPU. R400 towards a better monitor will be more beneficial than an extra core/200mhz.... Samsung 2033 for R1250?

I think the HD4890 for about R2000 is the best value graphics card out there at the moment. 20-30% more performance for R400 more than a HD5770 is a huge difference. He would have to increase the budget slightly to around R7000 though as he'll need a slightly beefier PSU (550W) but it will be worth it in the long run. The rest of the system looks good, especially for multi-threaded games.

Buy second hand rig. R6000 will get you a good machine just wait for some desparate twat who needs cash.......look on prophecy there should be a couple. You might even walk away with spare change and a lot of freebies.

If I could play devil's advocate for a second here. If you're just after something to play the latest games on (ie. you already have a PC for web browsing etc) why not look at one of the consoles?

He has 2 x 8 meg connections, i'm sure he could source "something". :p

p.s. i know its a joke.

This is way off topic, but since we on the subject of DA and rebeltech... why do none of them sell the xtreamer media player.

The DA website has not been updated for some time, mostly thanks to the sale deal taking almost 6 months instead of 4 weeks as planned! The Xtreamer looks like a product that we should include in our lineup - how does it compare to the Mede8er?

Absolutely brilliant.. bought one about 2 weeks ago.. by far the cheapest media player/streamer I've seen and does pretty much the same as the more expensive ones. Can have a look here: http://www.xtreamersa.co.za/spec.html

I'm sure the Mede8er will be slightly better given its twice the price, but for the average guy wanting to stream HD, it's definitely a product you should include... the place i got mine, which afaik is the only distributor in CPT says it's one of their biggest sellers.

because his current PC isn't that great for web browsing either!

I only officially bought the company last Monday (even though I have been running it for a few months) so now I can finally start hiring people to update the site - which has unfortunately not been maintained as it should....

Will send you a quote on Monday when I can confirm pricing, but it will look a little something like this like below (this spec may not even work in the current configuration :D). I know a lot of guys will tell you that the processor is too weak, and it needs more RAM etc.; but the display card, Rand for Rand, will offer the biggest performance benefit for gaming. Obviously Gigabyte is expensive and you could shave a few hundred bucks off buy buying another brand. I also have some really well priced stock that needs a home.... Lastly, you could go for a 5770, and use the R1000 price difference on other components.

And assuming that you will be running Linux of course :D

Not a bad considering the HD5850.I bought my rig last year and got the gts 250 1gb and 19" screen with the rest of the components for 6k.I agree the dual-core 2.6 is not that bad.I've clocked mine to 3.8ghz on stock cooling.
