I see Telkom's busy laying fibre in Coley street and also in Coetzee street.

And now in Windsor Road (the Garsfontein Road side).

They make new manholes, dig trenches and put cables in them, put up renewed Telkom boxes and put up wooden poles on the sidewalk and wire them up.

And after that it still takes forever. They installed the fibre in the existing manholes here in March, but still nothing to show for it.

I'm guessing they want all the wooden poles wired up in the whole area first...

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Absolutely brilliant news!
This can't come soon enough! Telkom LTE has been so useless lately, that I ordered Afrihost's 5+5 GB LTE SIM (which coincidentally arrived like 10 minutes ago).

As soon as the fiber goes live, I'm jumping on the bandwagon faster than a bored college kid at a protest!

What they seem to be doing is trenching and putting up wooden poles at some spots on the sidewalk, there are then connected to the wooden poles that runs behind the houses/along the spruit. Slow progress but should be done before year end.

I'm on 10mbps ADSL at the moment, so my LTE is backup only.

I wonder how they will communicate with us to move over to fibre...

Hey guys
As regards the Telkom roll-out specifically, posts like this one in this thread should give you a good idea of what to expect as regards the physical part of the roll-out. There are many other technical posts in that thread that will give you lots of detail, if you want.

You can wait for Telkom to contact you (reactive!), or you can keep an eye on the official Telkom coverage map around your address. Your "cue" is when your area goes from light pink (planned) to "dark purple" (available). At that time, you can make application direct to Telkom, or with any of the other ISPs who offer service over Telkom's FTTH infrastructure. Pro-active ... much better idea!

Well you could just keep your eye's glued to the Garsfontein Fibre Community's FB page or you could do it jcheek's way too. Also that thread he's linked is for fibre deployment in general for Pretoria, so either thread on this forum subtopic should give you the best answer to when it goes live. Just don't be a fool and sign up on the 24 month contract they're trying to spin off onto people.

Slight correction : my Telkom-based FTTH in Pretoria thread is exactly that : Telkom-specific.
But I have no beef with any other FTTH providers who may be - or may become - active in the area :D

Don't knock 'em! Those initial 2-year contracts were pretty critical in getting early adopters (like me :D ) on board, and giving critical mass to the early FTTH roll-outs.
Now that the ball is rolling, folks are lucky enough to be able to avoid them, though it may mean coughing up for installation.

I wouldn't let that get to your head dude. Frogfoot will also hit the area, its a matter of time. Then hello 100mbit line with a terabit of download bandwidth for only R1420 p/m install fee R1700. Thx Iconnect!

Who knows maybe once they're done it'll be even cheaper, meanwhile the poor Telkom contract signers still pay 1k for a 300GB 50mb line. GG

One can only hope that the DFA line running 80m from me is finally of some use... and they better waive any install fees for making me wait so long.

Yea... that is used for something else... Not sure why the hell they even put it there... Oh wait... no, no can't be for my super duper secret porn stash collection...

Well you're in Garsfontein so you'll have the benefit of Telkom and Frogfoot. I think I have Iconnect's flyer lying around somewhere...

Maaaannnn!!! Why does it have to take so long!

They're digging right outside my complex! The pipes and cables are visible.
I feel like grabbing a shovel myself to speed up the process!

I see the signs say Huawei contractors, for Telkom. So, I guess this means that it won't be Frogfoot then?

Bump!

So Telkom Fibre just went live for my address in Garsfontein X10.

Would like to make the switch ASAP. My ADSL has been giving me endless syncing problems the last month or two. Even after Telkom replaced the cable from the pole to the house.

Any suggestions on ISP. Any extra info or tips & tricks will be appreciated.

Uncapped is not necessary for me. Use max 60GB per month.

Lucky, X5 is still light purple...

I literally check every 2nd week or so and ours was also light purple 2 weeks ago.

Couldn't believe my eyes when it popped up as dark purple. I rushed over to WebAfrica just to make sure and would you know it, I got the "How Cool – You Can Get Fibre!" screen.

You could always go with Telkom, friend next door got his installed via Telkom in under a week. ISPAfrika is a 2nd and then Iconnect would still be 3rd.

Thanks. If I understand correctly though, Telkom is only on 24 month deals at the moment.

Will look into ISPAfrika.

I think so, yea my 2nd choice would be ISPAfrica. Iconnect took around 4 weeks just to get Telkom out to me and then it was a mission to get updates. So far my experience with them is 6/10 but they are improving.
