I'm getting 504 Gateway Timeouts on the following website:
http://www.cybertopcops.com

Now this only happens on Vodacom 3G, other ISP networks like MTN and Telkom have no problems connecting and loading the site.

I am the owner of this site and checked my access logs, the site is registering visits from all over the world, including South African visits, but the South African visits are mainly from users on networks other than Vodacom 3G. I contacted my hosts just to make sure that everything was OK with the hosting server and they confirmed that there were no problems on their side. They have tested it with several ISPs and only Vodacom 3G fails with a 504 Gateway Timeout.

I have contacted Vodacom Customer Care several times and they say that their 'Advanced Data Department' have tested the site with several 3G data cards and 'logged in' successfully without any problems, but the problem is that they are testing it from the Western Cape. I'm connecting from Pretoria.

Can anyone on Vodacom 3G confirm this (and perhaps tell me where you are connecting from)?

The same is happening for the following site as well. Vodacom 3G doesn't work, but I can access the site via the MTN network.

Thanks.

Firstly switch your connection to the [searchforum]internetvpn APN[/searchforum], and then confirm with your hosting company that it has deployed a DNSBL solution that results in some visitors to your site being greeted with the 504 gateway timeout if the hosting company finds the visitor is using a dynamic IP address on a blacklist.

PS: welcome to MyBroadband :).

Thanks.

If we can get a few tests from around the country, it'll help.

Please give your area and APN and if you could see the sites or not.

Area: Western Cape, Somerset West
APN: internet

Cyber Top Cops opens no problem. Gateway Timeout(504) on other one though.

[*UPDATE*]:

APN: internetvpn

Cyber Top Cops open no problem. "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." on the other now. Is that the same as Gateway Timeout?

Yup scamfraudalert.com not working over our IS ADLS line either.

At the moment I'm so sick and tired from the inexperienced, under-qualified support consultants at Vodacom Customer Care. Yesterday I spoke with someone who could not understand that I'm using 3G to connect to the Internet (yes can you believe that!?) and when I mentioned HSDPA she had no clue what I was talking about.

I guess I need to phone Vodacom to have internetvpn APN activated if I haven't used it before, right? Does it cost anything extra to activate internetvpn?

Thanks for the replies so far, my gut tells me there is something wrong with the Vodacom network over here in Pretoria.

Yes, call 155 and ask for your data SIM Card to be provisioned for the internetvpn APN, and instructions for changing your dashboard settings to switch to the internetvpn APN.

No, takes about 4 hours.

You can add www.spamhaus.org to this list as well. I've asked 2 other Vodacom 3G customers in Pretoria to test the sites and both of them got the same 504 error.

If this is a DNSBL then it means a lot of people in Pretoria are using blacklisted IP addresses.

A lot of sites tend to do a DNSBL check before allowing a visitor to the site to view any pages, and usually all the visitor sees is the non-descript gateway timeout error.

IMO hosting companies & websites that indiscriminately use DNSBL lookups and reject visitors are extremely stupid and are shooting themselves in the foot: most visitors to websites would have been assigned a dynamic IP address by their ISP, at some point one will be assigned an IP address that was previously used to spam and has subsequently been blacklisted, also it is common practice to simply blacklist all dynamic IP addresses within an address range. So doing a DNSBL lookup to decide whether or not to allow traffic based on an whether the client's IP address has been externally blacklisted, is IMO a very stupid idea. There are legit cases for doing such a DNSBL check - e.g. if one's site has been the victim of a DoS or DDoS attack, but it's the indiscriminate use of DNSBL checks that really irks me.

Note that the above has nothing to do with any ISP, so it's not Vodacom's fault, and it's not Telkodemonopolies' fault either - I have experienced the 504 issue using ADSL many times, it's not the ISP's fault - it is the webmasters and hosting companies that are pig-headed and stupid - in this particular 504 gateway timeout case.

504 Gateway Timeout - www.cput.ac.za

Good Day all.

I have been trying to access the above mentioned website for a few days but get 504 Gateway Timeout.

Can anyone verify if it is down or if it is a Vodacom issue.

I am using the internet APN and I am in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.

Thanks.:)
