Gautrain looking at massive expansion

If they can get a Randburg-Sandton link going, their numbers will skyrocket. Everyone stuck on Conrad and Republic every morning can essentially be moved over to the train.

I appreciate the Benefits but the majority of people are left out from using the essential service.

The bus's are late cos they wait for more passengers as they cannot travel with 2 or 3 passengers.

The buses are late due to having to sit in traffic with other vehicles, hence my BRT integration comment.

A 10 minute ride that would cost more and take 40 minutes by car during peak periods.

Yes, it isn't cost effective between 2 neighbouring stations. But for longer distances it is. If you buy the monthly pass, even more so.

I drive between Randburg and Centurion every day. My car is fairly fuel efficient. But it still works out to about R1800-R2000 per month, just for fuel. Add in maintenance and it's even more.

Then there is traffic and frequent protests to deal with when using the car.

So yes, as soon as there is a Randburg station linked to Centurion, I'll be switching to the train.

We initially used the Sandton ORT route frequently but it’s now cheaper for two people to Uber the full distance and you don’t have to deal with taxi thugs at the Gautrain station pulling you out of your Uber while Gautrain “security” watches.

Personally I think the Gautrain is grossly overcharged and I’d prefer it if they refactored new carriages to have seating limited to sides/drop down and make it more of a standing train.. + drop pricing.

The whole it’s a premium service but we full and can’t guarantee seats need to be looked into and potentially taken to task on it. I wonder what happens to people who fall in carriages because no seating is available..

I never use Gautrain to airport unless solo and even then.. not always because it works out cheaper just to take an Uber from home esp with FNB & Discovery(25%) discounts.

This is great, and would be a very worthwhile investment.

The externalities from gridlock and congestion are immense. More and more cities have to move toward proper integrated transport networks, not single occupant car-dominated networks.

Yes, so many ppl travel that route and there’s a huge bottle neck with Republic being the only practical route.

Will be interesting to see how this revives Randburg as well. Definitely a bit of a resurgence in the area, with the new mall at Brightwater Commons and the explosion of the film and TV industry in the area.

What in twenty years when it's finished? They've been saying they'll add this route since 2011 and so far 7 years down the line? By then it would be the sixth reinvention of the old Randburg waterfront.

This expansion is long overdue. That they are only in the beginning stage of phase 2 is unfortunate. Can only hope getting it done this time is a massive priority.

Traffic into Johannesburg CBD, Rosebank and Sandton from anywhere is a trial of patience.

I work at home when I can. It definitely helps me chill a little avoiding crawling through the suburbs.

A line from Sandton through Randburg to Honeydew and something that connects to Lanseria also would make massive sense.

Can't wait for them to link the Westrand.
Going to Sandton and Lynnwood often, and driving is a nightmare to both.
