GE developing holographic memory

This sounds interesting.. Although, I remember on the tv show "Beyond 2000" way back when, talking about biological storage which would have massive capacity and would technically be unlimited as it could keep growing.
As per Gary's comments, is this this just pie in the sky/what makes this different from all the other previously suggested/imagined ones?

I remember seeing the japanese on TV or in a mag somewhere developing this idea many years ago :/ then it sort of went quiet for a long time with the odd mention of the technology here and there.

There were supposedly problems with this that they could not get around?

I remember that show. The memories.
I still remember the presenter standing there, with his laptop in his hands, saying: "So how much will it cost you to hookup to the worldwide web? Well, about $100 will set you up with an account and get you the necessary software. And expect to pay between 20 and $50 a month browsing the net and checking your email. Happy networking." (I'm paraphrasing) Circa 1995
