A Core 2 Duo is the latest mainstream range of Intel Processors. Its dual core with 2 or 4 MB cache and ranges from 1.8 to 2.93 GHz in speed. Its has names like E4300 and E6420 and E6600 to differentiate the different speed and cache levels. It overclocks well. Its uses the socket 775.

The Athlon64 X2 is a socket 939 and AM2 processor. It is based on the single core Athlon64 but with two cores (A64 was designed to have good core interlinks from start). It operates from 1.9 to 3GHz speeds, has 1 to 2MB of cache and uses model numbers like 3600+, 4400+ and 6000+ to differentiate the speeds and cache.

Core Duo is the first mobile dual core chip processor with a heritage in the earlier Pentium M porcessors. It also played a lot of influence in the design of the Core 2 Duo.

Pentium D is a dual core processor in socket 775 form. Based on the Pentium 4, it is a inefficient design with basically 2 Pentium 4's stuck together and communicating with each other over the slow Front Side Bus. It comes in speeds from 2.6GHz to 3.6GHz and has 2MB cache.

Cool. So the entry-level AMD's run as fast as the entry-level Intels?
 
If by fast you mean GHz speed, yes. If fast as in Instruction per Clockcycle (IPC), no.

The Core 2 Duo is faster even at lower clock, E6420 (2.13GHz) faster than a 4600+ (2.4GHz).

This doesnt mean that the lower speed A64 dual core are SLOW, they are fast, just not as fast as a Intel of the same speed (and more cost)...

I see....

So which of the processors really measure up to each other? An E4300 = what exactly?

Is the 6000+ comparable to an E6600 or more like the E6420 then?
 
Ag, it depends on the program used and whatnot, checkout benchmarks...

Ya, I have checked some benchies but I am still not compltely clear.

It's just a case of when mates come to me and wanna buy Intel and I reckon they should go AMD, I like to be able to tell them what a similar Intel chip is to the AMD ones. Cos the ratings that come with the AMDs(2000MHZ and 2500MHZ and so on) clearly don't really mean much.
 
Show them a AMD system for the same speed (yes, 6000+ is between a 6420 and 6600) and price but with 1GB more RAM, and they will see the picture....

cuz one of my friends said duo was better and i got confused with both now i see duo is for mobile laptops and core 2 duo is for desktop er?

same here :P well my mom upgraded to a E6400 cpu while im sitting with my 4000+ 64bit,

and she wips my @ss with 2200 proccesors faster than myne :/
