General observations on Vodacom LTE

There's no need. Over WiFi connected to Telkom Mobile LTE, the comparison is dramatic.

General observations on Vodacom 4G/LTE

Telkom Mobile 3G just chewed through the same 3.7MB attachment in a few seconds flat.

Comparative speed test on TM 3G:

It's all but confirmed that Vodacom LTE has shaping rules on e-mail attachments.

It can't, as attachments are embedded inside Email body. If you receive Email headers, you can receive attachments.

However there are number of issues affecting successful transfer, starting from your own computer, protocol conversion ignoring erroneous packets (whether it is on ordinary gateway servers or activated spying equipment - as required by law) and ending with hard drive errors on the server.

Since my post here in January I'm very surprised to see that vodacom LTE is spreading like fire in Richards Bay and Empangeni.

I noticed that the coverage have improved so much in just 1 month that I'm actually shocked. Decided to use my vodacom prepaid sim in my new nokia lumia 1520 and has vodacom LTE most of the time. The speeds are not that great though with download speeds ranging from 8Mbps - 14Mbps and upload speeds ranging from 7Mbps - 10Mbps.

Its slightly slower than MTN LTE but its LTE and its fast so that is what counts. Sadly its not cheap. Prepaid data bundles can set you back quite a lot of money where Afrihost has way cheaper data that works on MTN LTE.

Yeah it isn't as fast as MTN LTE but that combination of up/down makes for fluid web surfing.

Today I downloaded some of my iTunes library onto my iPad - around 140 songs or 1GB - and it was done quite quickly. Nice to have snatched an unused SIM with 4GB from the wife's iPad.

YouTube was also better today but still got the odd buffer on full LTE signal.

So so performance with vodacom LTE.... Not bad but not the "best" network for smartphones.

I'm in Cape Town - Sea Point area - and my iPhone 5s is not happy with 4G. Constant dropped calls, loss of signal. I'm not sure what is causing the issue. Anyone else experience the same?

You have the latest updates on your phone?

I just upgraded to an lte device and I get signal in places where i never used to get signal with my previous device. The only explanation is firmware

When you say 'get signal' do you mean LTE signal? LTE signal radiation differs substantially from that of 3G. You may often get good LTE where before you had poor 3G.

Four bars signal, Helderkruin area. Still not breaking any speed tests but rock solid and very slick.

Edit: surprised and *thankful* to have decent broadband at a holiday town. As always, the free WiFi at guest lodges suck.

Must say im not to impressed with the Vodacom LTE speeds.
My speeds on 3g using the B593 is currently similiar to those.

VC needs to step up there efforts with LTE

I hear you brother but to me VC 3G is damn unstable. Their LTE, while not breaking speed records like MTN and TM, is flawless in delivery.

Vodacom data speeds at McDonald's in hatfield Pretoria is the most impressive I've seen it.

iPhone 5S
4G - averaging 25mb/s download
HSPA - averaging 21mb/s download

Friends Lumia 1020 (I think) hit 30mb/s download on 4G.

I've yet to test the speed at Vodacom offices in Midrand, apparently it's even faster.

No problem with 4G signal in hp and Cape Town.
Sun city in the north west they need to increase 4G though, it literally switches from 3G to 4G every 5 seconds, battery killer of note!!

Great! I guess Hatfield and Midrand have the best VC LTE service, better than anywhere else.

I do think VC is going to rocket to another level once they move to the 2600MHz spectrum.

So yeah Vodacom LTE is not that fast. The latency is good and the upload speed. So I was in Richards Bay CBD a while and decided to do some test and was kinda shocked what I saw.

The 8Mbps upload 1 is on LTE and the rest of the speedtests are on 3G in the same location.... Yeah 3G speeds the same as LTE speeds. Not very often you see that.

Incidentally I'd take the LTE result for a symmetrical internet experience (ignoring downloading). A fast upload is much more important than doubling the download speed.

General observations on Vodacom 4G/LTE

At 2:40pm on 26 March 2014, no more LTE. In fact no 3G. I'm getting Vodacom voice only, no data services. Is anyone aware of any problems in Sandton?

Edit: 2:58pm 3G is back. Hopefully LTE will follow suite.

Vodacom LTE was perfect again this morning, thankfully.

Still enjoying the speed of the service!
