Most elegant way would be to duplicate the original layer, turn the duplicate into black & white, then add a hide-all layer mask to the duplicate. You then paint on the mask layer the areas you want in b&w with a white brush. (Alternatively, add a show-all mask, then paint on the areas you want in colour with a black brush.) Also easy to fix mistakes by changing the colour of the brush to the opposite colour.

In CS4 you could rather add an adjustment layer linked to the original layer and use the layer mask on the adjustment layer. This allows you still tweak the B&W conversion on the adjustment layer.

Lesson learnt... Keep stuff in multiple locations... damnit

Just had a drive crash at home and I've watched 60Gigs of photos just vanish in an instant... *mutter*
 
Nope.. no chance.. :(

last 6 months of photography est gone... drive is making a LOVELY grinding noise......

My picture folder is now spread across 3 drives, a server and a removable drive now
 
Eish... I know how that feels. There are companies that can strip the drive and re-seat the platters to recover data, but it costs more than an arm and a leg. Only time I have ever used them was when our main accounts PC at work crashrf. Learnt my lesson in trying to make them do their own backups and now run a automatic raid backup system on all mission critical PC's.

Not sure if you like to try them, but I can get the number on monday if there is anything you really want to try safe?
 
Nah, its cool...

Its a lesson learnt, and I was being rather lazy so I needed to learn the lesson....

My Server is in the process of being raided for this specific reason, also so I don't keep stuff on my "desktop" pc anymore...
 
It's such a pity you guys are getting so shafted for bandwidth in S.A. JungleDisk makes me sleep so much better at night!

I entertained the idea of starting up something similar in S.A. so guys on local-only accounts can do their backups. But then realised the cost of bandwidth to me makes it almost impossible to offer something like this at a reasonable rate.
 
I wish I had access to something like that....

I have cloud services setup all over the place, but using them in a personal capacity is just WAY too expensive...
 
Triple redundancy is on the way.... :)...

Someone feel like sponsoring me a few SSD's to raid on my Server? :p

When my laptop got stolen along with my backup drive, that gave me a major fight. I now have a backup disc that stays home (mirror of my laptop's hard drive with SuperDuper!), one that goes on the road with me, a storage server at home, my photos get synced to my server, and my photos plus documents, etc, goes up to JungleDisk.
