I wasn't plugging APS-C - just pointing to what's possible with respect to higher ISO.
One thing I'll say is that the 50D is rather more sensitive to exposure with respect to noise. I can get exceptionally clean images but if I don't pay attention, I can get pretty noisy images too. I haven't really got the hang of it properly, but it's getting better.
I'm seriously hoping that, by the time I buy next body, the 5DmkIII will be out with a pop-up flash.
I dont see that happening.

remember, that if the D90 has a 1.5x multiplication factor, it means that the D90's sensor is half the size of 35mm/FF

1.5x means multiply by 1.5 to get a full frame. Or the camera in question is full frame divided by 1.5, which gives .06666666 - that confirms what bwana said: it's 2/3
The Olympus cams multiply by 2, so they are half size.

I guess I was. I looked it up though. The D90 has a 1.5x factor, right? Now check this:
D3: 36 x 24 mm (8.64 cm²)
D90: 23.6 x 15.8 mm (3.72 cm²)
So the surface is less than half! The diagonal might well be half, but I'm too lazy to work it out.

I have a dedicated flash. In fact, I have two. That's not the problem. My camera is not just a hobby. It goes with me to events like my company year-end party. I'm not the event photographer, I'm just taking it for my own snaps. On these occasions I don't want to fiddle about with an external flash. The camera is big enough. The pop-up flash is more than sufficient for such events.

Look, don't get me wrong. It's a labour of love. It's just that, on evenings like that, the aim is to have a great time, and it almost always involves some excessive boozing, so keeping it down to one device makes sense

I don't do the boozing, but when I go to family or friend events and pull out the SLR, battery grip, 24-105L and flash... I get strange looks - its also not easy to tuck it away and have some fun.

Yeah, that's the other thing. I can be reasonably inconspicuous with the camera alone. I don't like using the flash unless I have to, and I don't use the grip unless I need it for something.
