yeah, you might need the dslr for lowlight, and if you're going to be taking photos of the family the dslr is clearly better because of its lack of shutter delay and its superior flash metering

I'm sorry, Roux, but flash metering and shutter delay is piss poor on most P&Ss. Bwana does not want to be slowed down. He's going to be on holiday. Have you seen how small the 400D is? That's most certainly not a size problem. Sure, P&S is great for landscape, but for people photos DSLR is the clear winner.

Maybe you should get a DSLR - you'll be surprised how uninformed you are.

I'm slowly learning to only take gear with me that I will use. I used to carry as much as I could, but then I only use two lenses so there is no point in risking taking as much as you can carry. I'd say choose your main walk around lens, and then as light a zoom tele as you would be happy with. Add the nifty fifty and flash and finish off with only required accessories.

I've been shooting with P&S's for longer than dSLRs. I know their limitations as well as anyone.
Its a convenient size.
Slow focusing and poor low light are unavoidable with the P&S. The flash on the Nikon is ok for fill but not so much use for anything else.
That's pretty much what I have down as my definitely maybe's. Another consideration - if it will fit - is my netbook.

Exactly. I must say that if I had the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm, I would take them regardless of their size... and then add the 50mm.

I made that mistake only once - when I went to Hong Kong I took my Crumpler Daily XXL filled to the brim. Only after walking a few blocks there did I realise it's pretty heavy. But it was too late, and the place I was staying didn't fill me with confidence in their security, so I didn't want to leave anything there. Only when I got back to the airport and they weighted my bag, did I realise I carried 14kg with me all the time. Never again.
These days I take either my Crumpler Pretty Boy XXL or Lowepro Fastpack 250, depending on weather I need my laptop or not. Both take about the same amount of camera gear - enough space for one body, three lenses (or two bigger zooms and two small primes), flash gun and a few odds&ends (filter, extra battery, cards, remote release).
Room to spare . . .

I wouldn't bother with the kit lens if I had the 16-35 and the 28-40 already. If your body breaks you can get yourself a 1D here

Oops, I meant ...16-35 and 28-300...
I've only got to carry everything until we land. From there its pick and choose depending on the day.
