AF micro calibration... as automated as the process is it's still going to take a while.

Anybody with a Canon EF-S 24mm F2.8 STM lens here?

Thoughts? Happy with it?

Look, I really like my 50mm F1.8 but on my crop sensor body it does tend to become a bit of a tight shot or even leads to missed shots at times.
Especially with the kids. There isn't always space to back up when they are doing their thing.

I'm busy saving up for something like the 24-70mm F2.8 or even 17-55mm F2.8 as an all rounder lens but in the mean time forking out less than R2k for something like the 24mm is looking really appealing to me.

I have one on my 70D as we speak. I keep it on the camera for family candids around the house. Like you say, it's much more usable than the 50mm. Mine gets much more use than the 50 or 40. The focusing is noisier than the 50 STM, if video is your thing. More like the 40 STM. But the focus seems accurate and, while I'm no expert, the pictures look pretty sharp, even wide open.

Coincidentally it will also be used on 70D.

I don't think I've ever even touched the video button on one of my DSLRs so focus noise will not bother me at all.

As long as focus is fast and accurate (you know with the fast moving toddlers) I will be happy. I end up shooting at F4 a lot with my 50mm. Find it to be sharpest close to that range and then have less worries about some parts of the subject being OOF like with 2.8 or faster.

Busy building my own "little" variable LED light panel. LED part is 200 x 200mm.

Beginning phase only now.

ProtoType 1 finished.

Everything except for the dimmer and power supply was stuff lying around in my garage. So not the most professional looking product. But it sure as hell is bright.

Mounted on on old home made braai light stand/tripod thingy. Swivels horizontally and vertically.

If you wondered what the brackets/grooves in front were for. To be used for diffusing and coloured gels/plastics for different effects. (This one not cut to size obviously)

I used pure white LEDs that I had in the garage. But if I have to go by eye I would say it has a very slight blue tinge to it. But like very very slight.

I'm yet to try it out on food or a portrait of the kids or so. Just so damn busy at the moment. Need to actually make time.

I'll probably make another after this one. Tighter packed LEDs, lighter and thinner plexiglass and a more versatile tripod/mount for more angles. Perhaps add deflectors like the commercial ones.
 
So today I also got around to building myself a new infinity curve. Other one made from plywood was pretty crap to be honest.

This time used plexiglass and a properly constructed wooden frame.

Not too fond of continuous lighting for portraits - the subject invariably ends up with pinprick eyes.
