Quick question:

Got a 1 gig MS pro duo card, and I want to maximise the amount of pics I can take with it.

What is the ideal size for the pics? Just needs to be more or less 1024*768 or I could even live with 800*600. Now I have an option to set the "pic size" to 10cm*15cm. How many pixels do you think that probably is? Otherwise if I have to I will quickly test tomorrow.

And secondly, how noticeable is the difference in pic quality between jpeg normal and fine?

Dude, buy a bigger card - they're not expensive. In a few years when you look back at those low res pics, you're going to want to kick yourself. Shoot in your camera's native (i.e. highest) resolution - that's where it gives the best results.

Why not spring for another card and keep taking the images at the highest possible setting?
 
MS pro duo ? Sounds like you bought something that "ek sou nie" buy. Sony memory (and xD from Fuji/Olympus) is a proprietary format and costs a lot more than standard formats like CF/MMC/SD.

When shooting you should always shoot at the highest resolution with the lowest compression (super fine). I would not go as far as to say you should shoot in RAW, most non SLR cameras like my Kodak that does allow RAW captures are very slow at it. But the less compression you have the less compression artifacts you will have. Also, the higher the resolution you shoot at the more detail is capture and this will show up when you print images at high DPI.

While pixels are not directly translated into dots it does scale in terms of quality - the more pixels you have the more DPI you can get from it.
 
Maybe I should just get another 2 gig card (I currently have a 1 gig card). I would also prefer to shoot at the best quality possible, but on a 1 gig card that limits me to +-560 shots over a 8 day period! Which isnt that much...

Anyone know where I can get decently priced MS Pro Duo cards? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_Stick#Memory_Stick_PRO_Duo . As far as I know, its the only cards I can use in the Sony Cybershot W55.

I went into hi-fi corp the other day and the first guy was like.... uh? What? He calls over someone else who knows what I want, but they dont have stock. Incredible connection want R180 for 2 gigs I think it is
 
I paid R300 for a 16GB card earlier this week. SDHC - works on all out cameras. What you can also do is perhaps get a microSD to MS PRO Duo adapter and then you can get a nice 8gb microSD card that will also work in your phone.
 
There is no slot for an SDHC card on my camera though? I dont really need an extra card for my phone, but would it work out cheaper to take the MicroSD card with a pro duo adapter? And how would it affect performance? (Time taken to save images etc)
 
Yes it will be a lot cheaper since you can then using an industry standard memory format and not a proprietary one. If you buy a Class2 microSD card then the performance might be slower than what you currently have, however you can get Class4 and Class6 microSD cards for cheap and they offer very good performance.

If you do plan to buy a new camera someday make sure it can use regular card formats. I know newer Fujis does allow for SDHC but in general Fuji, Olympus and Sony use their own formats and it is purely to extort more money from customers.
 
No time to order over internet unfortunately but that is pretty ingenious!! I will look at it in the future.

Or even, where can I get one of these adapters at a walk in store? The microSD will be easy enough to get hold of from Game or somewhere (correct?) but will they all stock the adapters?
 
No sure about that - but I guess they might. If you have lots of time you can buy them from Hong Kong over eBay - thats where I buy all my memory related stuff from.

microSD is pretty amazing cause you can adapt it to work in pretty much any device out there. (except ye olde SM/xD devices).

Try hi-fi corp, incredlible connection, game, maybe the local kodak store. Dont know where else really.
 
Damnit... Hi-fi corp dont have, IC are getting stock in tomorrow only, and game also dont have. So Ill have to be very selective with my pics.

But now I will make one trade off: Pic size vs Jpeg quality. I think it would probably be best to just reduce the size and keep the best Jpeg quality rather than the other way around. Agreed?
