Minneapolis City Council commits to dismantling city's 'toxic' police department

A majority of the Minneapolis City Council agreed Sunday to dismantle the city’s police department after the in-custody killing of George Floyd, a council member said.

In a tweet, Alondra Cano, who represents the city’s ninth ward, said the department isn’t "reformable."

"We're dismantling our police department," Councilman Jeremiah Ellison said.

Speaking during a community meeting earlier, council President Lisa Bender called the city’s relationship with the department “toxic” and vowed to “recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe.”

“Our efforts at incremental reform have failed — period,” she said. “Our commitment is to do what’s necessary to keep every single member of our community safe and to tell the truth that Minneapolis police are not doing that.”

Nine of the city’s 12 council members have agreed to the move, NBC affiliate KARE reported. Cano said the majority is veto-proof.

In a statement to NBC News, Mayor Jacob Frey said he would work “relentlessly” with city’s police chief, Medaria Arradondo, toward “deep, structural reform” and to address “systemic racism in police culture.”

“We’re ready to dig in and enact more community-led public safety strategies on behalf of our city,” he said. “But I do not support abolishing the Minneapolis Police Department.”

Who would have thought? Criminals want to stop the Police. What next?

First there was the violence and then the response.
The same with Floyd - first a crime then the response.

The police have been "responding" to totally nonviolent protests with brutal violence, justify that. And George Floyd was suspected of forgery, hardly a crime worthy of a horrible choking death

For all the folks clutching their pearls at ideas around defunding/reorganising/abolishing police departments, it has actually been done before very recently and the outcomes are good.

A link has already been provided earlier in the thread showing exactly the opposite.

South Africa is a great example of how you can mess up the Police.

Yeah when Churchill basically purposely diverted food stocks from your country to Europe for further the stockpile and caused millions of people to starve to death who else are you going to turn to?
Totally yep , not glorifying either side , just highlighting the tendancy of countries to use whoever they can get to be soldiers regardless of their beliefs .

Where?

Allegedly, too. Never proven. Of course, we know who deserves due process and who doesn't.

Are we still trying to denigrate Churchill. Good thing that nothing people say on this forum will ever change Churchill's heroic and great contribution to the UK.

He never choked to death at all. His neck didn't contribute physically to his death whatsoever as per the autopsy report on our drug-addled victim who died from a stress-induced heart attack which started before he was ever put on the floor.

Look at all of those white supremacists.

Well I don't live in the UK so I don't give a flying frik what UK think about Churchill just like I don't dive a frik about a Mongolians opinion on Genghis Khan.

People tend to put rose tinted glasses when looking back at their nations history.

Yes, pulling down statues makes everyone forget about that person in history.

That is why no one has ever heard of this guy called Stalin.

Now this post is peak racist virtue signalling
I don't see the racism , innapropriate use of the inception meme yes , racism nope.
Edit - people still crying racist but it was just police brutality.

More that it makes the children never learn of them in the first place, in the case of Stalin everyone gets taught a white-washed version of him that never existed.

I don't understand this love of churchill some people have. He was a temporary dictator in a time of crisis that wanted to revive what he saw as a glorious empire which entered both world wars because other powers might have cut into their profits or prestige. He was a raging imperialist, randomly lost his temper at people and generally a drunkard.

The only thing in his favour is he refused to lie when everyone around him insisted on on it.
