seeing as that other thread is no longer valid ,for reasons we all know Eg winky being piss poor this season and clearly intoxicated,as he just falling over without no reason :D,so we cant really put him in the bracket as best in the world anymore:D *and there dbecks just fainted*

now it was easy to compare messi to ronaldo as they play fairly in similar positions ,but its quite difficult arguing the gerrard v messi debate as they play in different positions ,now both have past legends in their corner ;) gerrard has taken K.A.K.A's mantle as the best in the world in his position playing in the hole behind the strikers

lets look at strenghths and weakness

Messi strenghth:unbelievable dribbler ,scores alot of goals (this season),control of a football is out of this world,ability to create something out of nothing ,vision,can win a game single handedly
weakness :go's missing in the big games (im overcritical) ,doesnt influence games as he should (against strong opposition) ,very predictable (i have my reasons),suspect temperament ,doesnt like to track back

Gerrard strenghth :Power ,Vision ,passion ,unbelievable ability to not want to lose,prolly the most effective midfielder on the planet (goals n assist) ,incredible engine ,can win you a game single handedly ,passing ability ,great leader,fantastic temperament

weakness : go's missing in some games (im overcritical) ,sometimes sloppy in possesion, doesnt run at defenders enough ,sometimes make the wrong decisions in tight games (overcritical again)

so before the fanboys want to kill me ,they are both currently my 2 favorite players :D love watching messi destroy defenders with his dribbling ,and love watching gerrard destroy defenders with his movement

i am not gonna choose either one as they are both the best at what they do in their respective positions

Gerrard v Messi....interesting

Tough one for me to call because Gerrard is my all time favorite footballer and Messi is without a doubt(some would say arguably) the most talented footballer since Maradona.

Gerrard.

1) Can play anywhere on the pitch

2) Leadership

3) Man for the big games. 2005 CL final, 2006 FA Cup Final and countless other games

More than makes up for Messi's natural talent.

Love the topic. Interesting one.

I think you wrong with certain points in your post but of course you are entitled to your opinion.

I use to be a massive Gerrard fan, up until this season. When i saw how he cheats. Still like him, but not like i use to.

You probably dont watch enough of Messi to make those statements.

1) He doesnt go missing in the big games. In fact its the opposite, he excels in the big games.

2) Messi influences alot of games, hence the world media has rated Barca ''not that good'' if Messi isnt playing.

3) Suspect temperament??? Are you kidding me? If there were ever a player who doesnt complain, he gets hacked every 5 mins. Gets shoved into the ground every tackle. What does he do? He gets up and plays on, doesnt complain. A true sportsman. I dont think there is any player on this planet who has that sort of attitude.

4) Very predictable? I disagree 1000000% The reason why Messi is so good is cos he IS NOT PREDICTIBLE. The reason why he beats so many defenders is cos they have absolutely no clue what he is going to do with the ball.

Things i like about Gerrard. His will and sheer commitment to the team. But in all honesty when it comes to skill, he is no where near the brilliance of Messi. Seeing Messi have 5 players trying to tackle him and him still beating all of them is just something you can only think of Marodonna doing.

Watch a La Liga game and hearing the sky sports commentator saying how amazed he is at Messi and saying over and over that he is unplayable. Past players and greats saying things like George Best, Pele, Zidanne - they are 100% sure that Messi will be in that bracket in the future.

Somehow i dont see Gerrard being a great of the game like Pele, Marodona, di Stefano or Best.
Interesting debate tho, i will add more as the topic gets discussed.

Messi any day...

Gerrard can only play well for Liverpool... haven't seen him perform anywhere near where he should in England's matches.

Messi has dominated and single handly helped his country to olympic gold medal... "Barca is nothing without him" - I think this is a overstatement - barca has a lot of talent.

"Liverpool is nothing without Gerrard" - I think this is true, for a club to depend on two players doesn't help the club at all

Liverpool have proven that they can win big matches without Gerrard. But if other teams wthink we're a one man team that helps our cuase.
 
For me you have to ask yourself one question. The same question i asked when comparing Messi and Ronaldo.

Can Gerrard do what he does for a team like Reading, Bolton, West Brom? Can he turn the game on its head and make the team win?

The answer is no.

Messi can single handedly win a game for any team. This is proven so many times for Argentina and even more so for Barca.

In the CL Barca was down 1 - 0 in the 86th minute. Pep brought Messi on and he scored 2 goals in 4 minutes.

In the league the same thing happened. Pep brought Messi on in the 85 minute with Barca trailing 2 - 1. Within 5 minutes he scored 2 goals to win the game.

I dont see any other player on the planet being able to do that at the moment.

you are wrong ,theres no player on this planet that compares to gerrard in winning matches in the dying seconds ,even Henry said so a couple of months back ,messi has done it in 2 games ,gerrard has been doing it for 6 seasons ;) messi doenst even come close to stevie in this department boet :D
