gerrard vs messi

well that one man hasn't played for Argetina the entire 2007/08 season ;)

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=45843&cc=3888

I assume it was due to injury

But he was playing at the 2006 World Cup and the 2008(or was it '07) Copa America. He was on form in both of those tournaments yet Argentina still didnt win anything.
Like I said I've been watching Argentina for years now and even with an in form Messi playing for them they are STILL underperforming.

Gerrard is a class act but comparing him to Messi is foolish. Same like comparing C Ronaldo to Messi.

Messi is the best natural attacking footballer in the world. The likes of which we haven't seen since the heady days of Maradonna, Pele, Jordi Cruyff and Marco Van Basten to name a few. He's a footballing genius!

Gerrard has become a great player with the impetus of Benitez his manager giving him the free ranging role we're seeing him excel in at Liverpool. He's certainly the best attacking midfielder England have produced in a long time!

The England football side just flatters to deceive with some of the most over-rated footballers in the world. I clump Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King, Ashly Cole, David Beckham and Steve Downing in the category of over-rated BTW.

I hope Gerrard wins the PFA Player Of The Year award for his great season.

The question should be, how will Gerrard and Messi play together in the same team? I wouldn't want to be in that defence :(

A World XI with Messi and Gerrard will be a great side even for exhibition purposes :D

Bloody well if they had Masch and Essien to back them up. Otherwise all hell breaks loose on the counter!

I think Argentina needs to have an attitude change. You cannot coach big match temperament.

I'm a big fan of Argentine football, but at senior level they do choke at the big tournaments. The junior sides have done well which begs the question ... "What happens once they step up to the big leagues?"

They have the players but the mentality is wrong in my opinion :(

Come on... the 06 WC? He's tiny now, he was even smaller then. He was also underused due to the coach having a preference for larger players (I seem to recall that he said the Argentine side were "too small"). As for 2008, I don't know and won't comment. That little bit of info is free for you and Genius to duke it out.

he may have been tiny but there was an uproar when Basile left him on the bench for the match against germany. Many believe that at that young age he was already good enough to be a first team regular. Don't know if you saw how he destroyed Serbia and Montenegro in the group stages.

As for Copa America, he played and was arguably the player of the tournament. Scored some sublime goals. His cheeky chip against Mexico was a highlight for me.

Even these day Argentina arn't exaclty steam roling over oponents. Maybe the appointment of Maradona as coach will change things, but I'm not sure that he's the right man for the job. Was surprised that he stripped the immortal Zanetti as captain. Masch is good but not yet a leader.

Oiiiiiiiiiiiiiii........ Don't mention that humiliation. I get a nervous tick everytime I think about it. FFS...

Sorry for bringing up an old thread.:p

MCALLISTER: I’M WITH ZIDANE ON STEVIE
Jimmy Rice
Kop old boy Gary McAllister today added his name to the growing list of football legends who believe Steven Gerrard is the best player on the planet.
The treble-winning midfielder echoed comments by Zinedine Zidane last week suggesting Liverpool's skipper was now more influential on the field than the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Someone like Lionel Messi at Barcelona can put together wonderful pieces of skill, there is no doubt about that," said McAllister.

"Steven is a different type of player, but I don't think there is anyone who influences their team more than him. Or the players around him for that matter.

"He drives the team forward and you've seen that again with his performances over the last week. He has been phenomenal. I read what Zidane said and it's hard to disagree.

A ex-liverpool player backing gerrard

and a ex-real madrid player not backing a barca player......

Think gerrard is a good player but these days when I see him I can only think of his antics:

Ya, its like me posting what the President of Barca is saying about Messi.

Fill me in, has Gerrard ever finished in the top 5 for the Ballon d'Or or FIFA World player of the year?

LOL @ the pic (ARRRRRRRRH! my back...i mean my leg! no my other leg.....:D)

I was so pissed when that happened. Gerrard lost all respect in my books when he took that dive to win the penalty.

Some Liverpool users on this forum even came out and said he was fouled. LoL

Yeah that was pretty scaly even for Gerrard (or maybe not);)

I'm glad you said some.

from BBC commentry on tonights champs league game, thought I would post it here:

2046: I'd have to agree. A few years back, the great Shane Warne was asked who the best batsman in the world was. His reply: "1. Sachin Tendulkar. 2. Daylight. 3. Brian Lara." Right now, few could argue that Lionel Messi is not a mile ahead of everyone else.

2044: "I have just watched the first half of the Barca-Bayern game. The stage is set for Messi to clear up in this year's awards. For those who think Gerrard might be the world's best, two words regarding Messi: Different class."
