gerrard vs messi

The difference is, Gerrard played the 90 minutes whereas Messi came off the bench with 5 minutes left in the game ;)

As i said, i dont think there is any player on this planet who has that sort of impact on a game.

you are wrong ,theres no player on this planet that compares to gerrard in winning matches in the dying seconds ,even Henry said so a couple of months back ,messi has done it in 2 games ,gerrard has been doing it for 6 seasons ;) messi doenst even come close to stevie in this department boet :D
Like against West Ham in the FA cup final....the Bliksem!:p

When I saw the title of this thread, I cringed. I thought, what's the point in comparing these two? Two very different players, play in different positions.

Let me join this debate.

I use to be a massive Gerrard fan, up until this season. When i saw how he cheats. Still like him, but not like i use to.

I understand what you saying here. In fact, I also hate the fact that Gerrard has brought this into his game. Very disappointed to see him stoop to that level. I know many players do it but it's still regarded as cheating.

Messi is the best player in the world. Gerrard isn't even the best player in his position

At least point us in the direction of who you think is the best in his position and then we can at least discuss it and get some opinions.

Gerrard can only play well for Liverpool... haven't seen him perform anywhere near where he should in England's matches.

I've seen this numerous times being mentioned. I can't fault gerrard for this at all. Every single England player has been below par for their country. It's about passion and I bet you at least 80% of them have more passion for their club than their country. Gerrard for many reasons is in that bracket. I don't know fully why it's like that for the others but for Gerrard, it's because he was born and bred in Liverpool.

For me you have to ask yourself one question. The same question i asked when comparing Messi and Ronaldo.

Can Gerrard do what he does for a team like Reading, Bolton, West Brom? Can he turn the game on its head and make the team win?

The answer is no.

Messi can single handedly win a game for any team. This is proven so many times for Argentina and even more so for Barca.

The fact is that both these players have been playing for one club their entire life since they were teens. You could be wrong or you could be right, I don't think we will ever know. The fact that you say Gerrard can't do it for a Reading and Messi could is clutching at long straws. Their is no basis for your conclusion so why make one is beyond me.

Genius, you make lot's of good points but sometimes you come up with something like this and you blow me away.

How about we analyze this little pearl of wisdom before we continue this debate. This is a brilliant observation but you forget to make one little distinction between the two.

Gerrard is in the best years of his life, wheras this is Messi's first proper full season at Barca. They are at completely different points in their careers. How can you compare that? The comparisons between Ronaldo and Messi are more accurate if no other reason, than that they are of similar age.

Which is why we hear so much about Messi as the "next great superstar", because he frankly isn't diddly-**** right now. If he were to be injured and not play again - how many people would remember him? What has he won?

Conversely, you could cut off Gerrards legs tomorrow and he would still be considered a titan of English/Liverpool footie.
--
PS: Just to mak myself clear. I was not being sarcastic (the pearl of wisdom comment), you are the first person who has actually thrown the one-club titan thing into the mix. Ofcourse a player will give more than 100% if it is HIS boyhood club. Kudo's!

I didn't forget this, I know this. It's another reason you can't compare these players. Of coarse my original point was in response to Genius's ludicrous statement.

Liverpool have proven that they can win big matches without Gerrard. But if other teams wthink we're a one man team that helps our cuase.

Hmm win big matches without Gerrard?

They beat Real Madrid at home without him!
Also who in their right mind would say Messi is not a big game player, he probably plays his best football in big games.

ye they had the help of the Ref and the linesmen... Great Penalty call!

How do you expect to come back from 3 down? which the two shouldn't have stood?

I'm talking about the 1st game.

Gerrard didn't start when Liverpool beat Man U at Anfield earlier in the season.

Of course you can. Look how Messi plays for Argentina compared to how Gerrard plays for England. If he were that great he would be able to perform in ANY team.

Fact is, he doesnt perform for England. Hence the Lampard/Gerrard debate is still talked about.

smokey had a good point earlier, Messi is only 21 now. Gerrard is in the prime of his career. It is scary to think how good Messi will be when he is Gerrards age. Another reason why people are so amazed by his football skill.

Someone with so much skill at that age was last seen when Diego played, fact is that Messi is better than Diego when he was that age and has won more.

Scary!

Gerrard played in that match....as Supesta pointed out we beat Real at the Bernabeu without Gerrard. We also beat United and Cheslea without Gerrard.

Both Gerrard and Torres have had their fair share of injury troubles this season yet we are still in a great position in the league and champions league.

Not trying to be funny Genius but Argentina has not won anything in the last couple of years. If Messi were that great(as your claiming) then surely they would be World and South American champions by now? So your theory that MEssi could lead Reading to titles doen't seem to work mate :)

Gerrard has been playing first team football for 10 years now. This is only Messi's third or fourth season in top flight football.

Yeah!Thank goodness for those officials-came in as replacements and did a fair job:rolleyes:

Actually, it's his first full season this year. Last year he was injured most of the time and before that Ronaldinho was the King Dingaling. Which is why I hate it when someone tries to compare/glorify Messi now as opposed to after 2010 (for example) or after he has won a few things. Ronaldo has already proved himself with trophies (no matter that I still am of the opinion that he wouldn't have done half as much if it wasn't for Tevez and Rooney AKA workhorses), and for that matter so has Gerrard.

Patience people... the lad is only 21 and barring any horrific injury woes (akin to Robben, who has only this season at the age of 25, played any meaningful role in a club side) will most likely go on to become a living legend much like Maradonna and Pele (and Puskas you haters:p)...

Where did i say that Messi can lead Reading to titles? LoL

All i am saying is that a player like Messi can fit into any team and cause havoc for the opposition. He can ''turn'' a game on its head, hell it sometimes takes 6 players to stop him.

Have you seen Argentina play before Messi? Have you watched enough of them play i should be asking.

Honestly?

I dont believe one man makes a team.

I've been watching Argentina play since the 1998 Wolrd Cup. I'm a huge fan, and with or without Messi the team has been underporfimg for years now.

Well if you have been watching them, you would see Messi performs the exact same way he does for Barca.

Whereas Gerard doesnt for England.
