After posting that article about "I am not going to fix your computer" yesterday, a friend in our church phoned me yesterday afternoon. Her laptop had crashed. The drive was spinning up, but giving data errors and refusing to boot into XP.
She brought the laptop around and I removed the drive and put it into my small USB enclosure. Plugged it into a different computer and sure enough, Windows would not even show the contents of the drive. Said the partition info was corrupted.
Fortunately I had one of these CDs that I had just burned in the last month...
http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
which has this tool on it.... GetDataBack for NTFS (a Windows program)...
http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
I ran it on the drive, it took about two hours to build an image of the drive and then offered me the option of copying info back out of the image that it had created.
I copied her "My Documents" folder and recovered her essential work data for her.
So, yes... a highly recommended program!
Now, the problem is... that program is not Free (in fact a lot of the tools on that CD are not free). A license costs $79...R620.00
Should I pay the license fee because they helped me... or just consider it a demo use?
