Getting a dog, any advice?

Can confirm. Jack Russells are awesome dogs, but they want freedom and space. Also they shed A LOT.

Be firm, stick to routine, you are the boss and just because the dog is physically small doesn't mean it needs to be treated like a puppy, carried around everywhere, sleep on the bed etc.

Feed them high quality food (Royal Canin for example [/queue the opinions...don't care]), stick the portions, don't feed them your left overs and make sure you take them to the vet for their checkups once a year and you'll have a healthy dog.

We've never needed pet insurance - it's a money pit imo.

My wife had a chihuahua when I first met her - damn, that dog was just pure evil

you know you can buy a puppy from the SPCA, they don't just house ex pitbull fighting dogs with 0-30 fight record. My last dog was a labrador puppy...

pedigree dogs are known for their hip / body issues from years and years of forced selective breeding... it's like comparing a hobo to a Sandton poofta, now ask them both to eat out the dustbin, see which one ends up in hospital and which one is still as strong as a lion... and goes back for seconds :ROFL:

They are however quite 'stinky' dogs :laugh: so you need to factor in very regular washes and they do shed quite a bit of hair if you don't have it cut regularly.

Lovely dog for kids though - very lovable, strong and quite protective.

Yes, their ears especially need to be washed regularly.

Thats opinion, but I guess thats all that matters really. We've chosen to bring pedigree animals into our home after having 2 rescue dogs. Mainly because we could choose the breed, which personality traits based on what space we have and what we intend them to do. I will be moving back into a more outdoors role in the new year, and corgis ticked the boxes for that environment. Our dogs are family, but they have a job and we will work them.

You know you get to choose your dog at the SPCA, it's not a lucky dip whilst you sit in your car right? There are roughly 9,000 dogs at the SPCA and that excludes all the other animal shelters around the country.

You can find any breed of dog you want, they'll even source them for you, heck I bet there is a Corgi rescue society somewhere around SA.

Just out of interest do you breed with your dogs, not you I mean.. as in dog to dog? Have you told anyone else they are pedigree dogs besides the 3.2m people on MyBroadNob?

We will breed the pair to continue the lineage when They are old enough. Thank you for supporting the SPCA, and good luck with your animals.
