I have been a PHP developer for about 3 years now and I would like to move on to Java, I have some basic understanding of Java and I would like to study for a certification. Where do you think I should start and where can i take the exams in cape town?

thanks

@cbrunsdonza if it was just money I was after, I would have gone the C# route, but I am also looking at learning to develop mobile apps and c# is not very practical for that. so of the 2 evils Oracle and Microsoft, i think Java would be better.

If your looking at mobile apps then consider Android or Windows Mobile (C# see also http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb677133.aspx)

Java applets are not going to die, its just in the mobile content industry its only used by massive dev houses who resell the content to distributors.

EDIT: I work for an aggregation WASP and its only our larger clients who are selling Java apps for phones.

Android applications are written in the Java programming language, so it makes sense for me to learn Java. see http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html

You can get Oracle certifications through self-study, don't know if you're looking for a instructor-led course though.

No, I have been studying alone, I am looking for a place where i can register and take the examination, i.e a testing center.

You may register for Oracle certification exams in the areas of Java, Oracle Solaris, Oracle Solaris Cluster, OpenOffic.org, NetBeans, and MySQL with Prometric.

From here

Maybe try give Prometric a call, there SA number is here

Hey there, did you ever get sorted on finding a place to write your exams?

Java is the way to go. As far as I can gather the future for .net is uncertain with the changes coming in Windows 8 and metro. (I am not a windows users nor .net developer so maybe I have the wrong impression but things like silver light etc have changed from being the recommended way to go to being deprecated.) It does seem that large swath of the .net api will be deprecated. (I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong :) )

To book for pearson exam just go to http://www6.pearsonvue.com/Dispatcher?application=VTCLocator&action=actStartApp&v=W2L&cid=554 and search for a centre near you. I know the place I work is Pearson Vue registered and they offer the Java exams and training.
