Hi peeps, I am looking at going for an extended trip oversea 6 - 12 months, and I am currently using MTN. The problem is that a lot of websites and logins currently send a OTP to my phone via sms, and I also receives a lot of spam sms, so I am worried that if I turn on roaming oversea, I will suddenly receive a tons of smses and that will be an extremely expensive way to get those OTP.

Does anyone have a good / economic way to get those sms while overseas?

Thanks in advance!

The MTN website suggests receiving SMS while abroad is free.

Was in a coach and heading towards the Amazon in South America and my phone bleeped, unreal, sms.Sister company of mtn there.
I just block all unknown numbers these days.

It’s free to receive sms but as mentioned by @impracticaldogg there can be big delays. If it’s for a otp and you have 15 minutes or something then you could be screwed. Working in Colombia I’d only get next day for example for signing into work stuff.

See if you can change to email OTP. I did that with FNB and it made things much easier while overseas.

^^ random one. Years ago, was on Cell-C Prepaid and was out of the country for a while.

Ended up putting phone on charger, with wifi, and having VNC into it so I could still read my OTPs remotely

Unreliable of course, so you need to leave it at a friends house who can unlock it and get the wifi working say, or replug in the charger, but it worked!

Wonder if there's not a 'service' here that you give them your SIM card and they relay your OTPs by whatsapp or something :)
