Gmail account hacked? Google helps out.

the problem I am having is with my Vodacom Business Account Statements..... Google thinks they are phishing and puts them in the spam box, so I have to keep checking the spam box to see if they are there. When I click on them and say "Not Spam" they are moved to my inbox. There is then another link in the drop down menu where you can report them as "Not Phishing" and the red warning flag disappears. But next month it is back in the spam box with the red phishing warning. It doesn't help to create a filter either. The filter attaches your tag, but the message still ends up in the spam box. :(

My account was hacked last night from China of all places. I use a strong password but somehow they managed to get in. My pc is virus and spyware free according to my anti-virus software. I only log in from this pc - I never use Internet Cafes. Luckily the only damage they were able to do is send one spam message to a few of my contacts.

I think the main problem is people signing up to all kinds of site where they use their gmail address as username/email and then use the same password as well on that site

I think you're right. I've been guilty of that. I need to find a decent password manager.

There is a place to setup filters to stop this. just go to the message and by the arrow next to reply select "Filter messages like these" and then follow the setup and make sure to tick the box that says never send to spam... or something like that. :)

filters and labels are amazing. my O/T 2c :D

You might want to read my post again, especially the part where I say that I have already set up filters. :)

I suspect your filter is wrong. You cannot use commas to test for multiple email addresses or domains. You need to separate each e-mail address with a "|" (pipe) or you should use the "OR" Boolean statement. Also remember that the OR must be in capitals ("OR" is valid Boolean, "or" is not).

E.g. emailaddress1 OR emailaddress2 OR emailaddress3

oh noooo...

/me selects all and hits delete forever

Ah! OK, I will try that! Thanks. Funny that they don't mention that anywhere on the filter setup page

So we all agree, that while free, and while cool (the Hotmail of the 2000s, Hotmail was hot in the 90s esp with teenyboppers) that Gmail accounts don't have the advantages that ISP mail has.

I really like GMail because of the great functionality it offers, the integration into other Google platforms and the fact that you get about 7Gb free storage per email address, and it's free. The added features are quite helpful and convenient, very easy to check emails on your cellphone since just about every mobile OS has some sort of GMail application available. It also has a very good spam filter, I simply never see any spam in my Inbox.

But yes, it has distinct disadvantages. Bye bye privacy? Google use software to run through your emails to look for keywords to display ads you may be interested in. Some see this as advantages but since I use ad blockers, I see nothing anyway.

When compared to emails hosted by e.g. a web hosting company: Nevermind hacking, when GMail goes down (and it has) then you're immediately stuck and you cannot really call anyone for support, you can only hope they will fix it soon. Since you don't pay for the service you don't really have any right to complain either.
Also, if GMail for some reason decides to suspend your account, you could have a very hard time following some lengthy process of resolving the matter.. With a local hosting company you pick up the phone and sort it out and if that doesn't work, you can get in your car and drive there as a last resort. :)

That said though, I haven't had many problems with my GMail account(s) but I use it for personal emails only, for business I'd rely on a HOSTING provider like Hetzner where you can use a specific domain name. I wouldn't use ISP email because then you're locked in with that ISP. If you change your ISP, you'll have to change your email address as well and that can be a hurdle if you have 1000 people you have to inform about it.

I use KeePass. I can't operate without it. Just make sure you backup your password database file once in a while, just in case your main file gets corrupted. Never happened to me but who knows. Of course, never forget your primary password to open the database. ;)

Much obliged :)

Ja, Gmail has far more options than an ISP can offer you. It is way more versatile. ISP mail sucks in comparison with Gmail.
