Gmail account hacked? Google helps out.

Agreed. I have also done that in the past, and that's exactly how accounts get 'hacked'. I suggest keeping your email password TOTALLY different to any other password you use. For non-critical sites, use a base-password and add on a few letters for that site. Like if you choose ilon7M9 as your base password.. just add on F for facebook, MB for myBroadband, TW for twitter at the front or the end (or even both). That way your non-critical passwords are both difficult to guess, and cant really be tried on other sites.

I've also been hacked from China last night. One spam mail been sent to quite a few contacts. :o
I had a soft/ish password but changed that now.
Is this what happens if Google cheeses off China...?

No, the same thing could have happened to someone stupid using a web interface to their ISP email account. This is a PEBKAC error.

Was the e-mail entitled "Here, Surprise!" by any chance?

My account was compromised and spam sent from it. I had a strong password. Interesting enough, it happened just a few weeks after I setup my gmail on my phone. When I logged in on my pc, i got the message saying my account was accessed from China. I changed my password but also noticed that IMAP was enabled, which I have since disabled. Could they have used IMAP as a backdoor?

You make an interesting point regarding your phone. I too had recently setup GMail on my phone before my account was hacked. That may just be coincidence though :)
 
My account was hacked over the week end, spam send to EVERYONE even the director of my company:o:o

Had a strong password, but i use it on other forums as well:D;)
