hey any other gmail users out there?

this happened about 3 weeks ago as well. gmail is not accessable on 3g, and then suddenly it just works again. are there any gmail users out there who can access their gmail? or am i the only one again.

ok, gmail itself is not down. can access it from my works network. so what is vodacom doing to my security settings? why today. this is exactly what happened a couple weeks ago as well and it just mysteriously fixed itself.

I've just tried to access G-Mail over my ISDN line and also cannot get in. This is the same thing we saw a few weeks ago, i.e. non-3G users also battled.

I'm beginning to suspect a national DNS conspiracy :(

I was also not able to get in from our company network earlier, but it seems to working now...?

its amazing how you only miss something once you cant have it anymore. damn i cant live without my gmail. its an extremely powerful business tool. delete NOTHING. imagaine they crashed and lost EVERYTHING

I have to agree with you regarding this. I have noticed this happen more and more often. Sites that we claim are down work perfectly through international links. However remoting using 3G all the time is not a cost effective way to deal with this. Any ideas who or where we start to try and get someone to point us in a direction to resolve this ?

We're trying to trace the problem from our side. As I indicated, we see the DNS problems not only on the 3G network but also on other access networks, like ISDN and ADSL. So it points to something down the line.

Expert analysis / feedback welcome!

I have noticed this: On some days, especially in the early morning, I only have access to South African sites and email servers. Everything outside just hangs or times out. This is true for www.attglobal.net, www.cnn.com, for example. I have eight email accounts. Five of them are hosted in the US, three in South Africa. The SA ones I have no problems with. The overseas ones are a constant hassle at certain times of the day, even if I try to access them through web-based mail clients (e g www.mailsender.net www.gmail.com). An exception in terms of timing was this last Sunday, when I was unable to access any overseas sites or email from 1600 to 2000. South African sites no problem.

OK here we go. 0850 Tuesday 31 May 2005, good fast 3G connection, all SA sites including mybroadband.co.za running good and fast, www.gmail.com unavailable!

v3g, are there dedicated Vodacom controlled DNS servers for GPRS/3G customers to use?

If not, and an upstream provider's DNS servers are being used automagically, then perhaps those servers are overloaded, presumably causing intermittent issues with domain names not being resolved to IP addresses [which a customer browsing to a site would interpret as the link or site being down]...

For the record, I also notice similar things with iBurst's own DNS servers, usualy hitting the reload button in FireFox (refresh button in IE) does the trick, a pain in the ass though :(. Methinks in the iBurst case, the 2 DNS servers (Jhb & CT) are setup on ancient 286s or something...but this is the Vodacom Broadband forum, so I will stop moaning about iBurst here...:D

I asked the Vodacom people responsible for the DNS to comment on this, but I believe you've summed it up correctly, i.e. I don't believe we host our own DNS servers.

eh, V3G, you do... :D

wrt the DNS conspiracy. What to say, what to say.... Well let me say this :

1. Most DNS infrastructure in SA forwards through SAIX i.e. 196.25.1.1 or 196.25.1.9, or use SAIX as root hints.

2. The SAIX DNS farm is run on a huge cluster farm of HP Superdomes...

3. SAIX very recently placed an order with HP for a large amount of new HP Superdomes.

4. The particular model that was ordered is only used in the DNS server farm.

Make your own deductions.... ;)

It doesn't seem that simple, although that may be part of it. This morning at 0630, I am able to use email (on all 8 mail servers, really fast, no probs). However, I cannot find a single website, not one. Disconnected and reconnected, same condition. Then I say WTH and connect via GPRS on my M*N cellery. Now I can access *some* websites (inclusng this one) but not others. There seems to be no pattern.

*sigh* Well it is now 9:32. I am using GPRS on Distell-3. I can access this website, but almost no others, not even Vodacom.co.za.

The situation has ben deteriorating over the past couple of days.

This is very strange.

It is indeed very strange. Early this morning it was really bad. Seems to be better now, but some web addresses are still dead.

I gots the exact same problem, for a few days now.
I have not been able to log on to vodacom4me for 3 days cause the redirection keeps failing.
Some other sites fail to load too - also no pattern.
Originaly I thought it was my setup.
I wonder how many other people are in the same boat?
Maybe V3g can offer some advice on whats up.

Interesting. I have been happily surfing, quite fast , too, on all manner of sites. So I tried vodacom4me. Can't find it.
