God's name on tv

I'm with you on this, it annoys me alot. But remember we have the choice to change channel.
 
When my kids were young, Maude was on TV, and they grew up to ""Beep"s going to get you for that."

They were terrified of "Beep"
 
the irony here is that uttering the english word "god" is ultimately a way of not blaspheming.
jews don't write or say the actual name of god out of respect (ineffable).
if they were to, the western approximation would be yhwh or yhvh.
it was then westernised/latinised to be pronounced jaweh/jehovah (neither of which can be agreed upon).
even then it's a transliteration rather than a translation, as a better representation would be the "i am what[that] i am" which moses received.
which is more of an obscure reference to god's nature rather than a unique abstract identifier which we equate to names in modern times.
there are other versions such as el-ohim, el-shaddai and adonai, but these seem to be vestigial names for god inherited from the polytheistic canaanite roots of the religion. and those terms are certainly not ineffable from my understanding.

so if you take offence, rather live free and know that god isn't taking offence because:
1. the god referred to may not be the the abrahamic god.
2. "for i-am-what-i-am's sake" isn't said very often.

I strongly object to the use of the word "T**P**" In films and on TV.

It is offensive the the religion of many.

If you want them to bleep out the word god because your over-sensitive emotions can't handle it then they also need to remove it from the church programmes....

Yeah the Americans and their "oh my god" ...wow they should have it on their flag and anthem, it's like they don't even realize how much they say it.

You realise of course that the vast majority of USA identify as christian don't you?

So what's your problem? They don't seem to have a problem with it..!? It would seem they thoroughly enjoy their programming..

Are you a new type of christian? I don't understand..

I heard things far worse than oh my god, or jesus christ in freaking Primary school, ..I don't understand what planet you're living on..

In 99/100 instances they likely don't realise. It's become part of the US vernacular, with little to no thought going into its utterance.
 
I think it's the Brits that say "oh my hat" and somehow watching an American Evangelical Charismatic preacher stand up and say "let's praise Hat Almighty for this generous offerings we are about to receive", just does not do it for me.

You're not hearing your god's name, you're hearing the word 'god'. Your god doesn't have a copyright on the word 'god'.

Let's suppose your name is Jacques - does that automatically give you the copyright to the word 'human'? Now let's suppose you marry a sheep, and the sheep takes offence to the word 'human' being used, because Jacques might take offence to it. Can you see how silly this is becoming?

As somebody said earlier, if your god has an objection to his name (not the word 'god') being used, then he should be the one to take it up.

Big +1. For some reason, people are selfish enough to assume "god" is about them and their religion.

Just out of curiosity JacquesZA, do you take offense to the game God Of War and the name?
