so I'm going to get uncapped and I want to know everyone's opinion
currently I have no Telkom line, no modem, nothing.

so I want a fast responding internet that actually runs close to the speed it's on, looking at 2mb/sec business, just so it would not get shaped, or would a 4mb home be better in response?

the use would be for high end gaming (need low latency) on 1 pc, and casual browsing on 2 others, casual downloads, and perhaps wifi connection for max 5 cell phones.

I do not want to be locked in a contract so want to buy modem/router cash, and have a reasonable budget, what should I get?

also what Telkom line is best if I do not actually want to make calls, but want my ADSL line with Telkom as many 3d parties who manage it for you have problems.

oh any other suggestions?

Telkom uncapped. No other option. Unless you can afford q business account

Uhmm... there are a lot of products out there. Usually, I would recommend Afrihost - however they are having some network issues at the moment... however it should be all sorted by the 10th of April :)

I've heard good things about TI recently :)

They've been promising the earth for months, blaming everything else except the network. Zertop seems to be posting a lot of support messages for AH, so make your own mind up.

I would go with Telkom for now and see how they suit you. Their service has picked up quite a bit recently, they are cheaper and offer double the speed of AH for cheaper. You can take it on a month to month basis.

Uncapped for most ISP's is fraught with difficulty (read shaping & throttling) so maybe consider capped.

Yea - that's what I'm saying - not great at the moment.

For that usage case definitely 4Meg Home. I'd recommend axxess:

If you have absolutely nothing, the best and cheapest way to start off is with Telkom Simple.

All of the Telkom Simple packages include the following:
  • Telkom Landline rental
  • Free evening and weekend Telkom to Telkom landline calls. Up to an hour per call. *Terms and Conditions apply
  • Free landline and ADSL installation (New customers only)
  • Free Prepaid Internet Starter Pack (3G USB modem and 200MB recurring Telkom mobile data for 12 months)
  • Free WiFi modem

You get all of the above with no strings attached, no contracts. Even if you cancel, you can keep the free modem and 3G dongle.

I would start off with the first package, called Simple. I would supplement it with an account from another ISP. My preference is for a high cap account from Afrihost, rather than any other uncapped account, unless you're willing to fork out for business uncapped.

Also, deciding whether to go capped or uncapped depends on how much data you plan to use, and what you plan to use it for. So if you can provide a bit more info about that, we can make better recommendations.

You can always upgrade to a more advanced account if need be :)

Had about 2 months of issues with telkom but everything is a-ok at the moment for me.

Was throttled on a 4mbps account with Telkom after using 200GB for the month, so just check your usage.

AH Business has been far superior, had a day or two of issues but they managed to get me running great now. Once the capacity issues are resolved I am sure everyone will be happy again.

I'm not allowed to recommend Afrihost anymore :D People get angry at me :P

You have to sign a contract with telkom to get a line

What taranis said.

uncapped has a lower priority than capped.

Telkom Simple.

I agree. For the first ADSL I would suggest Telkom Simple (They also include free installation if i'm not mistaken).

If you become a more advanced user later on, you can easily switch to a different ISP :) (Just make sure not to sign any contracts!!)

Many complain about Telkom, but my 2mbps uncapped Telkom Simple account always flies It's a fantastic deal with free installation and free modem.
