Looking at a possible 5 to 7 year ownership on this if I do end up getting it

Similar scenario to me, one of the reasons I went with the Touareg I have, 3.0 V6 TDi but with a torque converter based automatic gearbox.

I did some research apparently it was the 2.0TDI from the 2008 until 2012 that had the timing chain issue.

But if this needs the timing chain that then not so worried I have a guy.

Timing chains on the 3.0 V6 TDi's are normally done around 160k km's I think if I remember correctly.

How has ownership been with the vehicle? Any issues? can I ask what your mileage is?

I thought chains are done only if the chain or the guides fail, well not fail but you will hear the rough idle.
I think this engine has 3 chains - one per bank on the V and one at the bottom

It seems these engine are mostly stress free
this particular on is the 160KW 500Nm so the engine is not stressed for power as the 180KW version although 20KW i doubt the engine will stress alot for that.
which year is the one you looking at?

It has been great thus far, no issues other than a small oil leak after the last service, which was simply the sump plug not being tight enough. She is on around 104k km's at the moment and isn't used much as I am working from home for the foreseeable future.

Nope, chains wear and get longer/slacker, their guides also wear as do tensioners, etc.

Same boat as you, working from home. Which has been awesome I didnt realise how much i spend going to work.
might put under 10 000km per year on that if I get it
my 2015 Ford Fiesta has 83 000Km on the clock its a 6 year old car which works out around 13 833Km per year now with lockdown and social distancing i doubt I would pass that mileage in a year, looking for a good cruiser for my trips to DBN, this seems like a good option.

Just asked my guy
He said timing chains are life long on these cars only if it stretches or the guides fail not in all case this happens then you change it.

Makes sense my E46 inline 6 did 284 000km on the original chain.

Maybe I am thinking of something else that need to be done at 160k km's but I have heard of guys changing timing chains before.

I bought mine before all the lockdown shenanigans so planned to drive it to work from the start and it was a great choice to replace my 2015 Golf R at the time. It has been great on the open road, the 3.0 V6 TDi engine is just superb and fuel efficient for such a large car. Despite my fiance's insistence that a Fortuner is better, it has coped well with our family trips away with our son and dogs on board. If we didn't need the space I would have gone for another A4 Avant or A6 size car, I love luxo barges.

Are you not thinking of Sump Service? I think thats most on the petrol engines and the GTis need those as well.

It may have been the gearbox and differential fluid changes which I think happen around 160k km's  For now it is just normal services, I had a 'major' done last year to replace oil, oil filter, sump plug/washer, air filter, cabin filter and fuel filter.
