Goodbye E-tolls

After years of heavy resistance from motorists, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced that the province will scrap its much-hated e-toll system.

Lesufi's announcement comes after finance minister Enoch Godongwana's 2022 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement.

The Gauteng road user thanks those who paid additionally for years for some reason keeping this system alive for years floating under the surface and producing so much debt.

Good work guys.

We already said our goodbyes a while ago so basically they just making it official.
Etolls was on a Vent in the Long-term care wing in the hospital, functionally braindead but kept going artificially

While I am happy that E-toll is being scrapped, but the debt needs to be repaid to the creditor, so since the government absorbed the debt, it is still coming out from the taxpayer's pocket at the end of the day, it just spread the burden across the country.
It also looks like the additional tax money collected are being used to bail out eskom and transnet, if the US and other countries are expecting a recession next year, makes me think that we should rather tighten our belt, pay down debts and have some savings in preparations for the next 2 years...

"while national government covers 70%" - NOT nice! So rest of the country who has no use of roads in Gauteng must bail it out?

You're 100% right. Similarly no more tax money generated from Gauteng should be given to the budgets of other provinces. No longer should the taxpayers of Gauteng be forced to pay for things in other provinces that they don't use.

You're all on your own now. Good fscking luck, you're going to need it.
