When TOPTV first came out, I was one of the few people to have the decoder the day before it was released. One of the first people to have it installed etc.

I loved it, not the best quality shows but acceptable. Now in the last couple of weeks, constant repeats good grief even on Kerrang!

I have now decided to cancel my TOPTV subscription, right now I rather have a media center

Already canning it, I haven't even been able to get them to install it, even though I got it on the first day ?

Maybe I should just throw the decoder in the dustbin.

Eish well at least I managed to get a decoder through all of it

I like that you at least you gave it a chance, and went so far as to try it out.

Don't know why everyone does not give the guys a fair chance. They only started out recently. I joined their research team to give them feedback on the content etc and they assured me that they are working on it. Speaking to loads of peeps with DSTV, they also repeat!

As for the installation, @Jola, try Sats-r-US, I got an installation date from them before having bought the decoder. They also have branches accross the country and have good reviews on hellopeter.com

A fair chance? I'll support TOPTV again when it is worth it for me. However spending money on it watching constant repeats isn't cool. I know DSTV has loads of repeats and guess what I cancelled that as well.

Why do I get a feeling that most of you guys stare at the Telly for 24hrs! Repeats for R249.00 with some variety in between is better than R529.00 for some bloated paytv (I can't remember how many times I have seen Party of Five), oh plus R60.00 or whatever it is for PVR functionality and another R60 for the dual view feature.

If you ditch TOPTV now the paytv field will never be levelled, and the BIG UGLY MCA will continue doing what it does best, milking the poor viewers, and buying out each and every little tournament of prestige, just so that the competition does not survive

Pendatic, but the PVR includes xtraview:o

I only watch about 4 hours of telly a week. With such little usage, even I am noticing repeats and quite frankly so soon, it is not on. WTF are people reminding about repeats on DSTV, I know that that is why I DO NOT HAVE DSTV!

R250
R529

A repeat is still a repeat

Personally, I tried the full service for 2 months and I've now officially downgraded so as to remove the movie channels. Saves me R60 per month and there's nothing worth watching there anyway.
I kept the Lifestyle bouquet for Discovery Science and the Kids bouquet for my daughter. Other than that, I don't watch any of the other channels.

+1

The problem with Top TV is that they have no premium channels. The Fox channels are the equivalent of Sony and Universal on DStv.
At least on DStv compact you get MNet Series, Vuzu, and MNet Action all with sparkly new content, and UK Footie and for R10 less that Top TV's premium bouquet.
Even DStv Select1 has some of these channels for R100 less.

If TopTV want to keep subscribers, they need to turn there own "Top" channels into Premium channels pretty quick. Top One could be a real draw card if programmed correctly.

100% agree. I also bought TopTV the day before launch. I switched on everything and in the beginning it was great. It is not even 3 months and it seems as if the channels are on a 2.5 month repeat cycle. Hour for hour, exactly the same. I agree that the channels that are aggregated overseas especially for TopTV need the most work. I would seriously ditch TopCrime. Absolute waste of bandwidth. More content and at least 2 new shows in prime time on TopHistory and TopExplore. There is no excuse. Tons of new documentaries have been produced internationally. I have also been a member of their research panel and have suggested a lot of the free to air channels that are in the UK for TopTV. I am cancelling for at least 3 months to see if they promise to add more channels and better shows in this time. We may just switch on the R99 bundle in Dec. The truth is DSTV Compact is starting to look excellent. They have shows across all their in-house channels that are at least 6 months behind the USA. There is at least 1 hot new show per evening in prime time (19h00-21h00) across all channels on DSTV Compact. TopTV is losing all their start up subscribers.

Will personally give them a year, not bailing out in a hissyfit because they repeat a show but not holding on longer than 12 months if I have to see the same show (and no new content) more than 4 times.

Down Grade and Down Grade... Be like me. Best of both worlds.

TopTV's entry into the market has been absolute bliss for me and my family - we are on DStv's Compact and TopTV's entry level R99/mth bouquets.

Apart from having all the movies I need to watch now with the extra movie channels that DStv added as a result of the competition, there are also other new channels (including Vuzu, Mzanzi Magiz - which is actually quite good, Discovery, MTV Base and Afro Music, and I'm sure I forgot another one or two others) - it is quite good. I was regreting not haivng taken TopTV's premium bouquet initially but when I saw what movies they show on Showtime (they showed one Showtime movie on TopOne) I was glad I didn't have the movie bouquet. I was even happier that they are repeating already on the other TopTV channels, which makes my R99/mth option an even more sensible decision.

For R99/mth I am enjoying it. From watching last seasons EPL games on Setanta and other sport including live Formular 1 to being introduced to a whole new concept of television on Current with the viewer content approach, my R99/mth is certainly worth it. TopOne is probably the best thing that TopTV have got - they show really great shows there CSI Miami, Kyle XY, 4400 and the Closer. Its surely money's worth.

My advice to you - down grade from full bouquets. This is where the competition really is. TopTV doesn't compete with DStv when it comes to movies and sport so don't expect quality in that department from TopTV. And DStv needs to provide a better offering of affordable TV viewing, so the focus of MC is now not on high-end viewers, but rather at budget beaters. Better content at less price.

This is truely good for everybody - instead of milking those with money to blow by charging excessive amounts, they (DStv) are now going for economies of scale like what TopTV is doing. They aim to make money by charging less to lots of people. Imagine if you were a person simply asking for money - and you only asked for R1.00 from each and every person in South Africa, you would have R48million. That is an economy of scale. This is TopTV's approach and DStv wants to beat them in achieving it.

Like it or not, the dynamics of the satellite TV industry in South Africa have been changed. For too long people have been held hostage. For too long people have been paying too much for too little.

Down grade and win.

who in they right mind would wanna watch repeats of EPL games? ... and Setanta doesnt show Formula 1, it's Superleague Formula which is made up of soccer team owned cars. ;)

beside the Zee Cinema channel for those into Bollywood movies and shows, toptv is a fail imo... they should have got proper content like sports, channels to cover events, more variety of shows and movies, etc before they launched.

Points of correction...

Repeats of EPL games now because it is off season, so review your team's performance or your opposition's before the season starts and know what to expect.

Formula 1? My bad. Don't really know the difference really. MC's bouquet with F1 is too overpriced for me to have real knowledge of it. They look the same anyway.

My point is simply that MC's premium bouquet is overpriced, they are upgrading their affordable bouquets because there is now competition.

You have to see what is happening.

Affordability is now the issue - there is a satellite TV war going on.

So, downgrade (either with TopTV or DStv).

I did with both (i.e. never could afford the overpriced premium DStv anyway).

I'm on Select 1 as I don't watch too much tv ... mostly news and select shows ... services my needs ... especially since I like Sky news and it's on select.
