TopTV's entry into the market has been absolute bliss for me and my family - we are on DStv's Compact and TopTV's entry level R99/mth bouquets.
Apart from having all the movies I need to watch now with the extra movie channels that DStv added as a result of the competition, there are also other new channels (including Vuzu, Mzanzi Magiz - which is actually quite good, Discovery, MTV Base and Afro Music, and I'm sure I forgot another one or two others) - it is quite good. I was regreting not haivng taken TopTV's premium bouquet initially but when I saw what movies they show on Showtime (they showed one Showtime movie on TopOne) I was glad I didn't have the movie bouquet. I was even happier that they are repeating already on the other TopTV channels, which makes my R99/mth option an even more sensible decision.
For R99/mth I am enjoying it. From watching last seasons EPL games on Setanta and other sport including live Formular 1 to being introduced to a whole new concept of television on Current with the viewer content approach, my R99/mth is certainly worth it. TopOne is probably the best thing that TopTV have got - they show really great shows there CSI Miami, Kyle XY, 4400 and the Closer. Its surely money's worth.
My advice to you - down grade from full bouquets. This is where the competition really is. TopTV doesn't compete with DStv when it comes to movies and sport so don't expect quality in that department from TopTV. And DStv needs to provide a better offering of affordable TV viewing, so the focus of MC is now not on high-end viewers, but rather at budget beaters. Better content at less price.
This is truely good for everybody - instead of milking those with money to blow by charging excessive amounts, they (DStv) are now going for economies of scale like what TopTV is doing. They aim to make money by charging less to lots of people. Imagine if you were a person simply asking for money - and you only asked for R1.00 from each and every person in South Africa, you would have R48million. That is an economy of scale. This is TopTV's approach and DStv wants to beat them in achieving it.
Like it or not, the dynamics of the satellite TV industry in South Africa have been changed. For too long people have been held hostage. For too long people have been paying too much for too little.
Down grade and win.
