Google Calendar SMS - Vodacom issues

I'm a Google Apps Premier edition user and have lodged a Google support request for contact details.

thank you for this symcom
a support request with Google might get the ball rolling

vodacomdata, just a suggestion...

can vodacom engineers not do the following:
- register a google account
- configure sms reminders
- trace blocked messages sent to the number you registered

this will show you where the messages are coming from and which number/short code to unblock.

or

get hold of an MTN user with working reminders, and see where they originate from

Vodacom Contact Details

Google has responded and I quote:

"Hello Johan,
Thank you for your message. Can you please provide me with a Vodacom mobile number to which Google SMS notifications are failing, and also the contact details of the Vodacom technical team.
Sincerely,
Tim
Enterprise Support"

I will send my number through - VodacomData please advise on contact details....

I am on MTN with a former Vodacom (082) number. My Google Calendar notifications are also not reaching my phone. Cannot receive the verification code required to setup the service.

I can not receive sms's and it won't even send me a verification SMS...

Same.. mine doesnt say could not though.. my google calendar just says sending via your carrier and thats about it.

I laid an official complaint with Vodacom. Their reply?
We have confirmed that the problem you are experiencing is not with Vodacom. Please feel free to contact Google in connection with your query.

Somehow I am not convinced.....

It may be with Google.. if my service is also not working? Im MTN.

Well if MTN is not working anymore either, maybe Google does have a problem. Anyway, I have now laid an official complaint with them, so let's see!

please do forward a response.

Maybe you should link this thread to Google if you can.

Hi VodacomData

I was wondering whether this is working?

Your provider blocked shortcodes. Your mobile provider might have inadvertently blocked you from receiving SMS messages from services that use shortcodes. Please ask your carrier to unblock messages from Google (48368).

Regards
Peder

Google feedback

Google Enterprise Support is working on this issue from their side and I quote:

Hi Johan

Thanks for your message. I've passed this to our mobile technical team for further investigation. Can I ask if your mobile number 082 xxx xxxx is set to receive SMS notifications from one of your calendars? Is this the sample number to which notification is failing?
As we don't have access to your account, please send a screenshot of the relevant settings page showing this number set up to receive calendar notifications via SMS.

Sincerely
Tim

What does MO and MT mean? Am I being retarded asking that question?

Sorry.

MO - Mobile Originating, its when you send a SMS
MT - Mobile Terminating, its when a network sends you a SMS

Shortcodes can only receive SMS and are MO based.
Longcodes can send and receive SMS and are MO & MT based. (Longcodes are also tagged with 1 to 10 digits usually with the shortcode that is linked to it. Not going to get into too much detail here).

Technically its impossible to receive a SMS from a shortcode in South Africa.

What can happen is that the "sender from" part of the message can be manipulated to something else and not the original number it came from. This is how it can appear that a message came from a shortcode. Such SMSs (MTs) can only originate from outside South Africa - no South African WASP may manipulate the sender from part of a SMS (MT).

i don't understand how "technically" it is impossible?

Can providers from SA not send shortcodes?

and sorry but what is this helping us vodacom customers if you say no this is impossible?!?

No, its not allowed by the networks in South Africa, they only transmit on long codes.

Its not about helping, its about telling you "Tough, this is how it works and this is why it is broken (from Googles side)".

Googles statement makes it clear that they do not understand how it works in South Africa. But then again I've had to explain this in more detail to many of our international clients who are also not aware of our networks MT system.

but then why did it work?

It makes ABSOLUTELY no sense...

oh and btw what is the messages we get from vodacom23? they are also shortcodes...

Lol - they cut the interconnect costs and a lot of other things as well it seems like! If it is not working on MTN either then VC is under no presure to get it fixed. Its a loosing game.
