Google Chrome is starting to suck

I really do like how everything works in Chrome and the tight Google integration with my other devices but it's come to a point where it's painful to use.

I'm using version 40 on Mac OS and it's so slow, pages take long to load, takes long to open new tabs, uses a crap load of CPU when playing video (even native webm).

Jump on to Safari and it feels like I've upgraded my internet to a gigabit fibre connection plus no excessive CPU usage on video playback.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it only a Mac thing?

I'm testing out Safari now for the next few days to see if I can adjust, so far so good.

Try disabling video acceleration in chrome.

Just noticed that it starts crashing at like 40 tabs...despite totally ram being at 5/8 gigs

Still not sure how to fix that

I used to love Chrome on Windows. When I got my Mac I simply couldn't ignore the fact that it totally sucks in comparison to Safari.

I only like Chrome on Android. I find Opera to be the fastest Windows browser.

Uses Google Chrome engine for the last version or two...

Chromium is more of a project than an engine. Blink and V8 are the engines. The Opera company actually contributes to Blink. I like the fact that Opera uses Chromium. Opera is the fastest it's ever been and it fools websites into thinking it's Chrome, so WhatsApp Web works.

It's not the rendering technology behind Chrome I don't like, it's the actual browser and user interface. It's difficult to fully explain, but it could be that of all the popular desktop browsers, only Chrome doesn't seem like a professional product. Opera blows it out the water for me.

I'm a Maxthon convert. I use it at work and home. I've also got it on my Windows Phone. I use Chrome a few times a month, if sites have issues with Maxthon. I'm not a Chrome fan anymore however.

Same feeling here. Chrome is virtually unusable on my home pc. I've switched to Opera.
And yes, I disabled video acceleration, started looking at other culprits, then realised 'Who cares? Its a ****ing browser. If it doesn't work just dump it for something else.'

Been using Opera and I love it until the pop ups started coming. Installed the popup blocker for Opera and now youtube videos won't play.

Had to go back to chrome.

Still a loyal Firefox user ten years later. I like the speed of Chrome and out of all the browsers I test with, its the one that is least buggy with Wordpress and Youtube. But it is a big system hog on resources. I wish Internet Explorer 11 wasn't so convoluted with some of the outdated methods of doing things in it.

I was a Opera advocate. Used it from version 5/6.

The problem is that the new versions are no where near customisable as the old versions...

I've been battling with Chrome on a Dell laptop with Win 8. I sometimes have problems with the laptop's power management which appear to be resolved when Chrome is off (even without media players being open). There are a couple of common websites which lock up, and I sometimes lose functions after a while (eg can't save pdf's from a url). A Chrome restart or Win restart solve these.

I've been a Chrome fan for years, but turning more often to IE as a backup option

They went 64bit on Mac. Maybe try that?

Chrome won't work properly with SARS e-filing (but that is no fault of Chrome)

There was a known bug in Chrome in earlier versions that leeched laptops batteries. Make sure you are on the latest version.

What popups? I have Adguard installed in Opera and haven't had issues. I also have the most popular Youtube addon installed, and it makes Opera the best browser for watching Youtube by a million miles. When you click the button to expand the video, it takes up almost the entire tab without resorting to full screen. And it prebuffers the whole video, can remember your watching preferences and offers a download button.

Have you tried IE? It's fast, most pages support it and looks good too. Works great as my daily browser
