Google.com/Google.co.za now local for some Internet users

THis is Great news... I also get a local Reply... Will go check at home tonight

IS has been caching a google server for a while now. I thought this was common knowledge.

This actually been the case for awhile not sure why it is suddenly news. But ja...
International for me on Web Africa 64 something

Google Global Caches and YouTube Caches are all local depending on the ISP you are with. These caches have been implemented for some time now as indicated by @TheGuy. TENET currently hosts this service.

It is common knowledge - we reported on it various times in the past. But did Google.co.za point to a local server?

OK, now my firefox at home can't open any Google site. Even after I cleared the cache. :(

Slightly off topic, but what happened to YouTube.co.za?
I get a USA flag on the Google Chrome extension. I might of missed previous posts about this though.

ah, that's weird. seems the problem was Afrihost. When I switched to my OpenWeb connection it is working now.

This 196 is the Internet Solutions' backbone. I cannot understand how they can say it's local when it isn't. It's IS' cache. It will only go to Google.com when it cannot find something, so it's not proper LOCAL as we anticipate a .CO.ZA to be, it's a shadow server controlled by Internet Solutions.

Pull the other three legs!

Since when are pings cached?

I'm afraid I'm still getting 300+ms pings to google.com from my side (MWEB uncapped account) but then my connection is very busy so maybe it's just me.

Fix your hosts file & it'll change to local.

Just edit your hosts file, put this in, and everybody gets it locally. I'm on mweb.

Thanks so much.
Added 196.23.168.147 mail.google.com to my hosts file and for the first time in more than a year has my gmail worked properly in East London on telkom ISP.
Now NOT getting the "still working" message when sending emails and the chat client now does NOT report " there is a problem with the internet connection and the chat client is now disabled." every 15 minutes.
I reported this problem to telkom and webafrica as it occurred on both for more than a year. No-one could find a fault. They told me it had to be a fault on my systems even though it occurred on several adsl connections in East London and went away if I used a proxy that broke out via a vpn in Cape Town.
Suddenly gone away now that google is local.
Fantastic news for users of gmail in East London.

Try and use local DNS servers versus the overseas hosted DNS servers
ie Google DNS servers 8.8.8.8 & 4.4.4.4
OpenDNS servers

Try web based dig to see the results:
http://networking.ringofsaturn.com/Tools/dig.php
dig @168.210.2.2 google.co.za -- IS
dig @8.8.8.8 google.co.za -- Google DNS

Local Only login : concerning the possibility of AVG antivirus & Skype ?

In addition to those below for Google/Gmail, anyone know of addresses & hosts which will enable us to :

1.) access AVG Antivirus & d/load updates ,
2.) use Skype

via a local only connection ?

Just edit your hosts file, put this in, and everybody gets it locally. I'm on mweb.
