Hey all,

I got my HTC Diamond from vodacom yesterday... pretty sweet phone.

So everywhere I search everyone says that Google Maps is preinstalled on the HTC Diamond....

Well....

I can't find it.. am i being stupid? Where is it? I basically just want to first see if the GPS works..when i get over that hurdle.. what software should i get?

Thanks alot for the link..that worked...

Which other software is good to use with SA maps?
I got the Touch Pro last week, tried Google Maps, Nav4all and amAze GPS software. Personally I would recommend amAze GPS, but I have to admit that I haven't used Nav4all enough and thus I can't say for sure if its inferior to amAze GPS. Best of all, they're all free, so download them all and pick the one you like most :)

You can use Garmin Mobile XT - it is the best you can get. Nokia Maps is also pretty good but for that you need a Nokia or Samsung or LG that runs Symbian.

Here is a brief comparison of the GPS software I have tried out :
This is what Google maps look like for Stellenbosch :

Some things to consider :
1 It is very inaccurate
2 A lot of streets are missing
3 All the data is pulled over the network
4 It has no voice navigation
5 Routing is limited (partially due to missing roads)

This is what Nokia Maps looks like for Stellenbosch :

Some things to consider :
1 It has a lot of details of points of interests AND roads
2 All map data can be loaded onto the memory card
3 It has voice navigation (2years free when you buy through vodacom).
4 Very capable routing, even has Afrikaans language file.

This is what Garmin XT looks like for Stellenbosch :

Some things to consider :
1 It does not get more detailed than this
2 Routing and voice guidance is EXCELLENT
3 This is the industry leading GPS and it is that for a reason.

Those screenshots were taken on my N82. Running the GPS can be a rather draining experience on these devices but the good thing with Garmin and Nokia Maps is that you can load the maps onto the memory card so that you do not have a EDGE/3G connection running at the same time as your GPS. The combination of those two can be a real battery killer.
