Google Me? No thanks

Rumours are currently doing the rounds that Google is in the process of developing a social network, dubbed Google Me, to take on Facebook.
 
Facebook 's interface is as about as organized and easy to navigate through as a college dormitory - If Google can improve on that and provide a facility to post my FB friends over I would be happy to sign over what is left of privacy over to them
 
What happened to Buzz? Has that taken off? Anyone using it?
 
1) This article is about two months too late... this rumour was broken ages ago.
2) Google already has a social media interface... it's called Orkut. The article ignores that fact, and then mentions Orkut later in the article in a passing way. Orkut sucks by the way.
3) Google has tremendous advantages in launching new endeavours and can snap up market share in a big way over a short period of time.
4) Facebook is going to lose a lot of users if they (a) keep on treating their users privacy with such disdain and (b) if a new easier to use but more secure platform comes along.
 
The sooner Facebook dies the better. The interface sucks & so does the way they treat their clients data.
 
From one privacy devil to the next. I can't see Google treating our privacy any better than FB. I'm not up to date with Google's stance these days, but I do recall serious complaints I read months ago.

The only reason I'm still on Facebook is because I discovered some long lost friends. If enough use this I might consider it, but I don't like the FB "feature" that link relations (like brother of...or went to school with...). The other main thing that I would hate is "who visited this page" - like on this forum for example in the profiles.
 
Anyone remember MySpace? The biggest and baddest social networking "club" on the block? Nobody dared even trying because "hey, it's too big, already done, they won and nobody will beat them"

In comes Facebook out of nowhere really.

Sure, it's gained grounds quite dramatically and everyone almost knows what Facebook is these days (unlike myspace years ago)... but seriously... everyone knows about Google... even those who doesn't know about Facebook or never heard about it.

Depending on how they approach this, this might be the facebook-killer some folks wants.... My-who?
 
I'd give it a try if it was easier to use than FB. FB UI is such a mess IMO.
 
Facebook is just a "by invitation" forum. Anybody with enough money to spend on marketing can build exactly the same thing and attract people to it.

Google is known as a search engine. I don't know too many people who use it for anything more than searching. Sure, they have a chat interface and a lot of other fancy features, but who uses them?

Personally I'd rather see the death of Google than Facebook. They are arrogant, unreachable, non-transparent and unfair in just about everything they do. Facebook could easily displace the usefulness of Google if they concentrate more on integrating things like news and richer content.

Content is essentially the difference between the two companies. Google actually doesn't own or produce any content, whereas FB does.

If Google Me is any good, I'll drop facebook in a second. Their privacy policy is bull**** and the interface is just as bad.

Pixual, wtf is your problem with Google? First of all, they offer all their services for free and second of all they try to open closed end markets to make it more competitive thus better. Just look what they did to the cell phone industry with Android.

You don't know many people then, do you? Google started as a search engine and is still mainly known for that, but many of their other products have been in use for years. Every time Google introduces a new product in an already existent market, that market changes. Take Gmail and Google Chrome and Android for example.

Bottom line is that MANY people uses various of Google's products because they are good.

Obviously, you don't have any appreciation for how Google has transformed the internet for the better. Facebook is not close to being the company Google is. They just are not comparable.

Here you are spot-on. Google makes it their job to organize the worlds information to make it more useful. Producing content is great, but somebody have to make it accessible and thus useful.

Goggle buzz, me, wave, friend connect - google finish your projects please!

First of all, there are many Google products I use on an almost daily basis: Gmail, Gtalk, Search, Maps, Earth, Docs, Adsense & Analytics (I'd add Youtube if I was sure about the affiliation) - in fact I have a whole bookmark folder dedicated to Google. Now I know that you can't expect every single product or service they launch to be a roaring success, but:

It seems Google Me will be - like so many other projects it started - just another way for it to keep a few developers busy while they could have been spending their time and genius finishing up google's other piecemeal and unpolished projects. I've been using Goggle Friend Connect on my website for a while now, and I think, like many of its other projects, it would have been an amazing project if more time was spent making it user friendly and practical.

So many of their projects have that dog-chasing-car kind of feel to them: Now that I've got it, what do I do with it?

Are many of Google's products just digital graffiti on the wall of a market segment saying "I was here"?

I'll definitely try it. I am quite fed up with the FB UI. The designers must be on crack or something.
 
The writer should have thought of the SERIOUS privacy breaches of Facebook .... I would welcome a competitor.

The fact of the matter is that most people just don't give a crap about privacy. Most people still have unprotected profiles, despite Facebook sending out announcements about new privacy settings. They couldn't care about taking the short amount of time required to make their profiles private, so why would they go through the mission of moving over to a new social network because of privacy?
 
As long as you don't get invited to water someone's crop and donate bricks so they can build their stupid retarded farm I would try anything else. By the way follow me on Twitter @Quintus26 oh can humankind not solve the social network conundrum!
