I doubt there are 300 million active Gmail accounts, and I don't know of a single (non-IT geek) person who would willingly use Chrome ahead of IE or Firefox. Most of them will give you a "Huh?" if you even mention it. Yet they all know what Facebook is and are happy to check in there regularly.

Bottom line is that MANY people uses various of Google's products because they are good.

Obviously, you don't have any appreciation for how Google has transformed the internet for the better. Facebook is not close to being the company Google is. They just are not comparable.

Google bought out Dejanews and completely fücked up the usenet groups by allowing anonymous trolls to bypass the ISP route and post whatever they felt like to as many groups as they wanted to. To make matters worse they then made the entire usenet archive available for import into web based forums such as this one, so whatever crap those trolls spewed forth onto usenet now gets perpetuated ad infinitum on thousands of websites who's only existence is to make money off of Google's rip off advertising program.

Here you are spot-on. Google makes it their job to organize the worlds information to make it more useful. Producing content is great, but somebody have to make it accessible and thus useful.

Rubbish. With their Adsense program they are responsible for the creation of more crap on the internet than any other company in the history of the internet. The only thing they are interested in is trying to own the internet and it is my ardent desire to see them fail as an organisation in every respect.
 
Google wins at search, email, maps and more recently android. Adsense and analytics only really "used" by webmasters etc. Youtube they bought but that's because google video didn't really take off (another me too product too late to the party).
Docs, Orkut, Chrome, etc not really doing that well. I think it will be much harder for them to ever catch facebook. Look at buzz/wave/orkut, all social stuff that google has but it doesn't really work.

Google Maps , Google Earth , Google Docs , Youtube [owned by Google] , Google Talk , Adsense ....are you still going "huh?" .

And for the record Google is not even making their money from "search", but from "advertising" . It's in their interest to connect everything and everyone on a single platform which they have control over, it means they can make money from something like "Google Me" purely because of the advertising potential. This is something Facebook has not quite gotten right as of yet , Facebook may be "huge" in terms of users, but i'm not convinced there are alot of money being generated/made based on the users. Google will most likely do "Google Me" with alot of "freebies" [things that normally cost you money, like file hosting / storage etc etc] to lure people in ...the drawback? They make money with Adsense in some way..

Now i'm not saying it's good how Google is "controlling the internet" , but i think you underestimate Google as a content provider and how many people actually use their products one way or another.

Don't know a single person using Google Talk or Google Docs or Google Adsense (I used to use Adsense but then I wizened up to the rip off). That's the point. People perceive Google as being a search engine and it will take a lot of money and a long time to change that perception. The only way Google are going to be a threat to Facebook or Twitter is to buy them out.

My thinking is that Facebook is more of a threat to Google than Google is to Facebook. It would be very, very easy for the techies at FB to build in www search capabilities to their website and get people using it immediately instead of Google. They are in a way already on the way to doing that with their "Like" and fan pages. Nothing is better than knowing that the websites you are visiting have been endorsed by people you already know and trust.

I hate Google and their attitude. The web will be a much, much better place without them and all the crap that they are responsible for.
 
What are you using now instead of adsense?
 
Subscriptions. I've earned about 10000 times more selling subscriptions to my site than I ever did with Google Adsense (and I get a fair amount of traffic on my forum based website). I wasted years waiting for Adsense to pay anything remotely approaching a worthwhile amount of revenue, when all I really had to do was cordon off parts of my forum to paying members only. It worked. If people perceive value in what you are offering (information) they are prepared to pay for it. Unfortunately the same doesn't ring true for South African web surfers who automatically assume that because it's on the web it must be free.

I've tried just about all the affiliate programs there are and they are all just BS rip-offs designed to steal real estate on your website without paying you what it's worth. The only one I have any trust in is Amazon (the original affiliate program). Google can kiss my ass. I won't even have their Analytics code on my sites.

I think Google should try everything and make it better if possible... if they can do things better, why not?!!? I don't have jack **** in terms of information worth stealing so why should I worry? What personal information can Google possibly steal that would make my life a living hell? Sure they can steal my identity... But I have my own ways and means to even out that score... :evil_grin:
 
Antowan, trust me... Google can make your life a living hell if you are singularly identifiable enough. I have suffered personally in immeasurable ways because of the uniqueness of my name in SERP's coupled with the libel perpetrated by Google Groups trolls - all because I decided to slug it out with them (the trolls) on usenet.

If I could find an international law firm willing to take on my case against the hundreds of websites that have published libellous material made available by Google and their usenet archives (via forum populating) I would never have to lift a finger for the rest of my life to earn a Dollar.
 
Just my first name, but then I accidentally used my unique surname once in a moment of blind stupidity. It was all they needed. It was a long time ago, but the lesson I learned is that what gets written to usenet never goes away, regardless of who writes it. So if somebody wants to launch a very bad smear campaign against you all they have to do is sign up with Google, join a few groups and post away. Those posts are not policed or moderated in any way. there is ZERO protection from Google.

Now that webmasters have the ability to populate their empty forums with usenet archives (courtesy of Google), whatever gets written to usenet will reproduce itself on countless vBulletin, SMF or phpBB based forum sites. People search your name on Google and what do they find? Yep, you guessed it.
 
Basically, from reading all these posts. The vast majority of people are more than happy with google and their services. Except for Pixual, who was retarded and thus had a bad experience with one of their services and now hates the company itself.
 
I am retarded because I used usenet (which Google doesn't actually "own") and have issues with the way Google archives and allows anyone to pollute those archives with whatever they like?

Pixual: I use Google search, use gmail for personal mail and for website and team mail with multiple private domains. Use lots of gtalk, google maps I'd still be lost somewhere. Use a bit of chrome although it's not as good as firefox but anything beats IE and have an HTC phone with android. Can't think of any other services of theirs I use offhand but if I come up with any I'll let you know. Now you know one person who uses more than Google search.

Don't use real information on FB and wouldn't on Google Me either. But hey that's just me. I don't need the world to know every time I cut my toenails or go out for a beer. But let google have a crack at it, competition is never a bad thing. If it hadn't been for gmail we'd all still be using yahoo/webmail/hushmail/mweb etc with our awesome 10mb mail boxes.
 
I'd be very happy to switch over to a Google alternative to FB. I live on Google and I love it. I use Google, Gmail, GChat, GTalk, Picasa Web Albums, Google Reader, Google docs, Google calendar, Blogger and... that's all I can think of off-hand. I'm sure there's more.
On the contrary, I got a FB account because of peer pressure. I never liked it, and when they started screwing with our privacy I got paranoid and angry and deleted my account completely. I won't go back. I also don't use Twitter or MySpace or any other social media of any sort.
I've never had a single problem with Google or any of their products.

I say bring it on. I'll definitely be willing to give it a try.

Personally, I would welcome google.me.

I use gmail for everything, can u imagine teh apps we could write for google.me epic.

I mean off the bat, google.me would have my contacts, my email, my docs, my calendar and and and and and.

Come on, google.me makes sense, i say bring it on.


PS: google becoming teh new microsoft? Food for thought. But i will sell my soul to google, the have it for most of teh part already.
