Google Nexus 5

I expect that, after the Note 3, 3GB ram will be the new standard for flagships in 2014. Given this, is it not a disappointment that the Nexus 5 only comes with 2GB ram?

But to be honest, I'm not even sure if 3GB ram makes much of a difference to Android's performance compared to 2GB ram.

WEll in theory the Nexus is the development device for Android devs, so if it comes out with 2GB then most apps should work fine with 2GB.

Part of the problem with the manufacturers' devices is that tack a bunch of extra software on top of Android, so you need more RAM from the start.

This is just my thought - not necessarily accurate. ;)

No. Android is becoming increasingly RAM-efficient. Samsung tack on these extras to win a spec war, without really putting any thought into the underlying system experience. The Galaxy Nexus, with its 1GB of RAM, runs circles around many devices on 4.3. My Nexus 4 is only using 37% of its available RAM, and I have 12 apps open at present (excluding background apps).

I don't think that it will be the standard either. Perhaps for tablets, but not for smartphones.

I think it would when playing graphic-intensive games. But GPU performance would most likely be the biggest denominator here.

I just learned that the qualcomm snapdragon 800 has the same low power core that can be used for always on Google Now like the Moto X.
It's a done deal. VPN primed, Postbox courier notified. Just gotta wait for it to launch now and hope it doesn't sell out.

Lol over a gig of the Note 3's ram probably goes to touchwiz.

My Nexus 4 just fell flat on the concrete and the front glass is smashed. Now I need to upgrade, or get it repaired

I'm surprised to hear that your ram usage is so low. On my S4, usage varies between 1GB and 1.5GB (out of an available 1.82). I do use Nova launcher instead of touchwiz. But I guess touchwiz runs deeper than that.

So how will you guys be getting a N5 upon release? Looking to get rid of my S3, can't stand samsung not releasing sources for devs. Want a true AOSP experience.

I don't think you should compare Nexus devices to Google Play Editions, GPE phones still don't get updates ASAP. They are also not sold at cost price (or with a subsidy)

I think I will upgrade to this phone. That being said my N4 is still mint contition. I have a ringke fusion and protective film on the back and front of the phone.

I had a look at the Note 3 users' thread- their devices use upwards of 2GB RAM, for goodness knows what...

OK, been reading around online and it seems that google has been tightening the strings on the play store. The old VPN and address change doesnt seem to cut it anymore. Has anyone successfully bought a device from the play store recently? Or have a known working procedure?
